Ella L. Harris

PENDLETON n Ella Louise Harris, 63, a native of Portsmouth, Va., died July 7, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital, Roanoke Rapids.

She was a member of Zoar Missionary Baptist Church and a homemaker.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zoar Missionary Baptist Church, Pendleton, by the Rev. William Denton Jr. Burial will be in the Flythe Cemetery, Galatia. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Rich Square, is in charge.

Survivors include her father, Floyd Scott Sr. of Pendleton; a daughter, Felicia Scott-Branch of Temple Hills, Md.; sons, Twoine Harris and Derrick Harris, both of Tuscon, Arizona, and Jeffrey Harris of Murfreesboro; a brother, Floyd Scott Jr. of New York; a sister, Ruth DeWitt of Galatia; 31 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Kelvin L. Futrell

AHOSKIE n Kelvin Lamont Futrell, 29, a native of Ahoskie, died July 11, 2008.

Futrell was a member of Mill Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Aulander and was past employed in the Deboning Dept. of Perdue Inc.

Survivors include his father, Donald Lee Powell of New York; his mother, Doris Futrell Powell Bush of Ahoskie; stepmother, Maggie Powell of New York; his stepfather, Paul Bush of Woodland; one daughter, Kelvonie Renee Futrell; a son, Kelvin Lamont Jr., both of Winton; and his sisters, Donna Futrell Wilder of Aulander and Connie Futrell of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mill Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Aulander, by Bishop J.C. Watford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Jessica Riddick

MERRY HILL n Jessica Quanshekia Riddick, 19, a native of Bertie County, died July 10, 2008.

She was a member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Colerain, youth choir, usher board, praise team, and a sophomore at Elizabeth City State University. She was also employed at Avoca Farm in Merry Hill.

Survivors include her mother, Sylvia J. Riddick of Merry Hill; her father, Phillip Demery of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Phillip Holley; a sister, Ellen Riddick of Norfolk and Willie Bee Demery of Windsor; her grandfather, Paul Riddick of Colerain; her great-grandmother, Sara Riddick of Merry Hill; and great-great-grandmother, Anna Slade of Colerain.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greater Wynns Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by Bishop Thomas E. Lee. Burial will be in the White family cemetery, Merry Hill. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Joyce M. Perry

RICH SQUARE n Mrs. Joyce Mizelle Perry, age 69, of Rich Square, NC, died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. Perry was born Oct. 24, 1938 in Bertie County, NC, the daughter of the late Jessie James Mizelle and Tulie Cale Mizelle. She was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph L. “Gas House” Perry Sr.; her sons, Joseph L. “Joe” Perry, Jr. and his wife, Tina of Murfreesboro, NC and Don Perry and his wife, Pam of Rich Square, NC; a sister, Linda Combs and her husband, Gene of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and a brother, Eugene Mizelle and his wife, Frances of Suffolk, Va.; her granddaughter, Brittany Perry; five stepgrandchildren, Michelle Powell, Jennifer Powell, Jessica Powell, John Powell Jr. and Michael Powell.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Lockwood and Rev. Greg Parrisher officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Monday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. and other times at the home.

Walter Kilby Perry, Jr.

Walter Kilby Perry, Jr., 87, of 226 Corner High Road, Eure, NC, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 in his home.

Mr. Perry was born in Gates County, NC and was the son of the late Walter Kilby, Sr. and Leigh Belle Felton Perry. A retired heavy equipment operator with the Virginia Dept. of Transportation, Rose Brothers Contracting and Portsmouth Paving. He was a member and deacon at Eure Baptist Church and also enjoyed membership in the Hall Ruritan Club. An Army veteran of World War II, he saw action in Ardennes Rhineland of Central Europe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Oran K. Perry, and a sister, Marian Borte.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 58 years, Fannie Selby Perry; six daughters and their husbands, Linda and John Lane of Eure, Ginny and Bill Alexander of Nags Head, Sarah and Mike Doughtie of Gates, Betty and Jim Liles of Sunbury, Vicky and Steve Blowe of Woodland, and Jeanette and Luke Eure of Reidsville; one sister, Myrtle Terry of Ahoskie; one brother, Earl Wayne Perry of Eure; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 10 at Cool Spring Baptist Church by Dr. Wayne Proctor and the Rev. Roger Kiker. Burial with military honors followed in the Eure Baptist Church Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

Debbra G. Shaffer

GATES – Debbra Gross Shaffer, 43, a native of Hampton, Va., July 11, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Shaffer was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Russell G. Shaffer; two sons, Raymond Shaffer of Hampton, VA and Bryon Shaffer of Gates; her mother, Helga Maria Frank Gross of Land of Lakes, FL; two sisters, Diana Knoblouch of Land of Lakes and Tarra Kunz of Killen, Texas; and two brothers, Bruce Gross of Tampa and Kenneth Gross of Hampton.

The funeral service will be conducted at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville. Friends may join the family in the funeral home following services.

Eugene M. Mizelle

COLERAIN n Eugene Miller Mizelle, 79, a native of Bertie County, died July 14, 2008 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. He was the widower of Inetta Mizelle.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elm Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Preston Jernigan. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home and at other times at Mr. Mizelle’s home. Mizelle was a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church and retired from the NC Department of Transportation.

Survivors include his sons, Michael Mizelle and Ronnie Mizelle, both of Colerain; a sister, Mary Lynn M. Hoggard of Colerain; a brother, Alan Mizelle of Ahoskie; and two grandchildren.

Mary Basnight

COLERAIN n Mary Basnight, died July 13, 2008 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Ashland Baptist Church, Merry Hill, by the Rev. Willie Best. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, James Henry Basnight of Powellsville; two daughters, Gloria Johnson of Colerain and Gladys Anderson of Ahoskie; two sisters, Bessie White of Brooklyn, NY and Dora Wilson of Windsor; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Jakayla K. Clark

RICH SQUARE n Infant Jakayla Kenyata Clark, died July 10, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Bertha E. Cooper

COMO n Bertha E. Cooper, 90, a native of Hertford County, died July 12, 2008 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Elliott Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, James Cooper and Wilbur Cooper, both of Como; five daughters, Bernice Bass of Murfreesboro, Priscilla Epps of Trotword, Ohio, Linda Carter of Anderson, SC, Mary Davis of Como and Brenda Knight of Franklin, Va.; two brothers, Webster Bynum Jr. of Long Branch and Bradford Bynum of Como; three sisters, Nell Everett of Murfreesboro, Margaret Batton and Lula Bynum of Como; 37 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

ROCKY MOUNT n Amir Anderson, 24, died July 11, 2008.

WINDSOR n Lillie Pearl Hyman Arrington, 58, died July 11, 2008 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
