Seniors close with loss

AHOSKIE – Post 316 built an 8-1 lead and held on as Edgecombe County defeated Ahoskie Senior American Legion Post 102 8-7 in the season finale Saturday.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the first frame.

Josh Morris walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an Aaron Hoggard RBI-single to center.

Edgecombe County responded with one run in the top of the third and then added six in the top of the fourth frame. They added their final run in the top of the sixth when they built an 8-1 lead.

Ahoskie got their second run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dylan Ralph walked and went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a Brent Bowen groundout and then scored when Grayson Toms reached on an error to trim the deficit to 8-2.

Post 102 added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Morris singled to center and Hoggard walked. Both came around to score on a two-run double to left-centerfield by Jacob Dunlow. Dunlow then scored on a Bowen RBI-single to center to get the local team within 8-5.

Ahoskie scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Toms reached first on an error, but then was erased when Joe Harrell reached on a fielder’s choice.

Ryan Matthews had an infield single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Harrell then scored on a Morris sacrifice fly.

After Hoggard received an intentional walk, Matthews scored on a Dunlow RBI-single to center, but a strikeout ended the game.

Jonathan Brantley pitched six innings and suffered the loss. Ralph pitched two innings and Morris tossed one.

Ahoskie had seven hits led by Matthews and Dunlow with two each. Morris, Hoggard and Bowen had one hit each.

Ahoskie finished 2-15 for the year and 1-7 in conference.
