Two arrested in Bertie County

WINDSOR – Two men facing different charges were arrested within 24 hours of one another this past weekend.

Detective Sergeant Ed Pittman of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office closed out two cases he was working on with the two arrests, one of which came on Friday, June 14 and the other on Saturday, June 15.

On Friday, Lonzie Lee Short Jr., 17, of U.S. 13 North in Ahoskie was arrested and placed in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail after being charged with incest.

Short was placed under a $10,000 secured bond.

Det. Pittman said he began investigating the case late last year and finally received the information he needed recently to charge Short. The original information came from healthcare personnel.

Just a day later, Stanley Sherwood Godwin Jr., 38, of U.S. 17 Bypass in Windsor was arrested by the BCSO.

Godwin was charged with two counts of felony worthless check and two counts of obtaining property by false pretense.

Godwin was arrested after writing two checks n one in the amount of $100,000 and the other in the amount of $75,000 n to a Bertie County business. The business turned the information over to Pittman who drew warrants for Godwin’s arrest.

Godwin was placed in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $250,000 secured bond.

Both men will make their first appearance in Bertie County District Court on June 26.
