EDENTON – Despite Aaron Hoggard’s booming bat, Ahoskie’s Post 102 Senior American Legion baseball team struggled to find much offense here Monday night.

In a game at Edenton Post 40, Hoggard cracked a pair of solo homeruns, but those two markers were all the runs the local team could generate as Ahoskie fell by a 7-2 count.

The loss was the sixth in eight overall starts for Post 102’s Senior squad. Meanwhile, their conference record slipped to 1-2 with the loss.

“We’re wasting pretty good pitching efforts with our lack of offense,” Post 102 skipper Randy Whitaker said afterwards, referencing his club’s five hits. “I thought Jonathan (Brantley) and R.J. (Deppisch) both pitched well, but we didn’t give either one much run support.”

Brantley worked the first six innings and absorbed the pitching loss. Deppisch pitched the final two innings.

The pitching effort aided Ahoskie in keeping the game closely contested as the score was knotted at 1-1 until Edenton plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to grab the lead for-keeps. The home club added two more markers in each the sixth and seventh stanzas to account for the final score.

Meanwhile, the Post 102 offense was basically confined to Hoggard’s bat. He tied the game at 1-1 with one swing of the bat in the top of the fourth frame and added another solo homer in the visitor’s half of the sixth. He now has four homeruns in eight games this season.

Brent Bowen added a pair of hits for Post 102 in the loss while Bryce Cullipher finished with one hit.

Post 102 now faces a tough three games on the road this weekend. They will play at Wilson at 7 p.m. on Friday followed by a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Pitt County Post 39 on Saturday.
