JACKSON – The new face of Northampton County Schools is Dr. Eric Bracy.

On Wednesday evening after a brief closed session, the Northampton County Board of Education handed down the unanimous decision to offer Bracy a contract for superintendent of schools.

“I’m excited we chose someone who grew up in the area, he knows the children in Northampton County,” said Board Chairwoman Catherine Moody after the decision was announced. “I know Dr. Bracy will take us to the next level. We unanimously made the right decision for Northampton County.”

Though not technically a native of Northampton County, Bracy grew up in nearby Weldon and Roanoke Rapids. However, his family roots run deep in Northampton County.

Bracy, 35, said both of his parents are natives of the county and he spent a great deal of time in the Margarettsville area and even drove a tractor helping relatives farm the land.

“It feels good to be back,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to come back here to be with my family.”

Northampton County not only played a role in Bracy’s upbringing, but helped shape him as a young educator. His first teaching job came 10 years ago at Squire Elementary School near Gaston where he taught fourth grade.

For the past five years, Bracy has been in the position of Executive Director of Student Support Services for Durham Public Schools.

Bracy received his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University, his masters from Virginia State University and his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.

As for his plans in his new job, Bracy said he will be a “visible” superintendent with his main focus on student achievement and “customer service.”

“It’s so important to me to treat the staff and students in a respectful manner,” he said.

Bracy will assume the superintendent position on July 1.

In the meantime, Bracy, his wife and three daughters will be searching for a home within the county. Bracy said he will keep in contact with the school officials until he begins his new role.
