AHOSKIE – Edward Joyner drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Joyner’s RBI-single gave Ahoskie American Legion Post 102’s junior team a 4-3 victory over Wayne County n North here Friday night.

Wayne County opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first frame, but Ahoskie answered in the home half of the inning.

Travis Ellis singled on the infield and stole second. He advanced to third on an Austin Cooke groundout and scored when Zeek Williams doubled to left. The one run left Ahoskie trailing 2-1.

Wayne added to their lead with another mark in the top of the second to go ahead 3-1.

Post 102 scored in the bottom of the third when Ellis singled to center, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Cooke got Ellis home with a sacrifice fly that trimmed the deficit to 3-2.

Ahoskie tied the game with a run in the sixth inning. Williams singled to center and went to second on a wild pitch. John Hunter’s RBI-double to left-centerfield plated Williams and left the game deadlocked at three.

Post 102 then scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ellis reached on a two-base error. Cooke walked and then both runners advanced on a Williams sacrifice.

Hunter was walked intentionally to load the bases with one out setting up Joyner’s RBI-single that won the game.

Brandon Warren pitched six innings for Post 102, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out eight. Ellis tossed the final two innings, picking up the win while allowing no runs and just two hits.

Post 102 had six hits in the contest. Ellis and Williams led the way with two each while Hunter and Joyner had the other hits.

“Brandon and Travis both pitched well,” Post 102 skipper David Ellis said. “This was a great win against a good team.

“We played great defense and got timely hitting,” he added.

Ahoskie improved to 3-0 with the victory. They will host Beaufort County Friday at 7 p.m. and will play at doubleheader at Oxford Saturday at 2 p.m.
