Thelma Shoulars

RICH SQUARE n Thelma Leigh Balmer Shoulars, 79, a native of Northampton County, died May 8, 2008 at Rich Square Villa.

Mrs. Shoulars was a member Piney Grove Baptist Church, Jackson, Mother of Church, Trustee of church, director of Vacation Bible School, member of Silver Lite Women’s Club, member of Northampton County Education Foundation, and a graduate of Elizabeth City State University. She was a retired teacher with Northampton County Schools

Survivors include her daughters, Alison Edmonds and Fannie Bush of Harrisburg, Pa.; brothers, Joe Lee Balmer and Willie Balmer, both of Paterson, NJ and Randolph Balmer of Spring Hill, Fla.; a sister, Ida Stokley of Paterson; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Jackson, by the Rev. Timothy Edwards. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Rich Square, was in charge.

Edwin E. Flythe

RALEIGH – Edwin Earnhardt Flythe, a native of Conway, died May 8, 2008.

Flythe graduated from Chowan College in Murfreesboro and NC State University for post-graduate work. During WWII, he served his country in the U.S. Army in the Medical Corps. In 1946, returned to Raleigh and opened his business, Flythe Sales and Service, later changed to Flythe Cyclery of Raleigh. He was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church and various other organizations.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Lewis Flythe of Raleigh; one son, Edwin E. “Skip” Flythe Jr. of Raleigh; two adopted daughters, Brenda Gregory and Linda Flythe; two grandsons; two siblings, Jane Liverman of Maryland and Matt Futrell Flythe of Florida. Service were held Monday in the chapel of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. A private interment in the church columbarium were held for family members prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations may be made in Edwin Flythe’s name to, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, School of Medicine University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 450 West Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27599; or to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s Street, 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

Garnette Tuten

RALEIGH n Garnette Leake Crocker Tuten, 84, a native of Portsmouth, Va., died May 10, 2008 at her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson. Burial will be in Seaboard Cemetery, Seaboard. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s Street, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel Arthur Tuten Jr.; her daughters, Lib Tuten McClenny of Raleigh, Martha Tuten Angel of Seattle, WA and Garnette Crocker Tuten of Charleston, S.C.

Clyde J. Warren

MURFREESBORO – Clyde Judson Warren 74, of the 200 block of Lewistown Road, died Friday May 9, 2008 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

He was a native of Hertford County, a member of Meherrin Baptist Church, a Farmer, and the son of the late Emmitt and Cornelia Davis Warren.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 57 years, Amret Byrd Warren, two daughters; Frances Conner, Murfreesboro, NC., Lynn Parker and husband Timmy, Franklin, VA., one son; Michael Warren and wife Crystal, Murfreesboro, NC., ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many more family and friends.

A celebration service of Mr. Warren’s life will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Meherrin Baptist Church, with Rev. James Hester officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at Meherrin Baptist Church fellowship hall from 7 to 8:30 PM Monday, and other times at the home.

Marshall Young

AHOSKIE n Mr. Marshall Freeman Young, age 84, of Early’s Station Road, Ahoskie, NC, died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at her home.

Mr. Young was born Sept. 29, 1923, the son of the late Grover Cleveland Young and Nannie Trummell Young. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Young. He was a retired contractor and a member of Early’s Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of forty-one years, Martha Helen Cox Young; two daughters, Diana Young of Ahoskie, NC and Diane Young Cooke of Aulander, NC; a stepdaughter, Janice Babb and her husband Dennis of Potecasi, NC; a stepson, Bernard Williams and his wife Sharon of Aulander, NC; two brothers, Donald Young and Carroll Young, both of Ahoskie, NC; four grandchildren, Kindrea Hewitt, Debbie Jenkins, Bob Marshall Cooke and Denise Mizelle; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Early’s Baptist Church with Rev. Robert May officiating. Burial will follow at Stony Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to University Hospice, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Charlie Burgess

HOLLISTER n Charlie Burgess, died May 10, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Holley Bell II

WINDSOR – Holley Mack Bell II of Windsor and Eden House in Bertie County, died May 11, 2008.

Bell was a graduate of Windsor High School, the University of North Carolina School of Journalism, the Graduate Institute of International Studies, University of Geneva, Switzerland and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He served in the U.S. Army 1943-1946 in the American and European Theaters. He was a reporter for the Charlotte News, Editor-Manager of the Bertie Ledger-Advance and Associate Editor of the Greensboro Daily News.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Bond Bell; two daughters, Lisa Bell-Loncella of Johnstown, PA; C.B. Guess of Summerville, SC; his son, Holley Mack Bell III of Raleigh; and three grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Windsor. The family request in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Thomas’ Church Memorial Trust, PO Box 400 Windsor, NC 27983, The Friends of Hope Endowment, 132 Hope House Road, Windsor, NC 27983 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Viola F. Harvey

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Viola F. Harvey, died May 10, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Judy Newsome

AHOSKIE n Judy A. Newsome, died May 11, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at the Williams Cemetery, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Pete Williams. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include her mother, Judy Newsome of Ahoskie; three brothers, Herbert Lee Newsome Jr. of Aulander, Charlie Newsome of Ahoskie and Leon Newsome of Bolivia; and two sisters, Patricia A. Clark of Murfreesboro and Carthinia N. Wright of Ahoskie.

Charlie Burgess

HOLLISTER n Charlie Burgess, 53, died May 10, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday at Pine Chapel Baptist Church, Hollister. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday at Pine Chapel Baptist Church, Hollister, by the Rev. Robert Hedspeth. Interment will be in the Lynch family cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Mina L. Martin

CONWAY n Mrs. Mina Long Martin, age 82, of Buck Boone Road, Conway, NC, died May 12, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Martin was born, April 18, 1926, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late James Clayton Long, Sr. and Lota Bridgers Long. She was also preceded in death by her husband Roger Martin. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children, Susan Martin Britton of Coquille, Oregon, Patricia Martin Bryant of Conway, NC, Tony Williams Martin of Severn, NC, Steve Cola Martin of Conway and Alvin Long Martin of Margarettsville, NC; two brothers, Emerson Long of Augusta, GA and John Long of Mineral, VA; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Milwaukee Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Wednesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church.
