Nannie P. Casper

COLERAIN – Nannie “Polly” Winborne Casper 74, a native of Hertford County, died May 7, 2008 in her home. She was the widow of Roy Franklin Casper.

She was a member and church treasurer of Harrellsville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sisters; Alice Felton of Eure, and Dorothy Griffin of Colerain.

A celebration of life graveside service was conducted Friday at the Winborne Family Cemetery, Colerain, by the Revs. Walter Johnston, III, Doug Stokes, and Dennis Adams.

Alfred S. Harvey

GATES – Alfred Scott Harvey, a native of Gates County, died May, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Harvey was a retired painter for the Newport News Shipyard.

Survivors include two sons, Jamille Harvey of Hampton, VA and Jason Harvey of Newport News; two daughters, Shannon Raikes of Colorado Springs, CO and Sherelle Holiday of Williamsburg; his mother, Iristeen Harvey of Gates; and four brothers, George of Atlantic City, NJ; Andrew of Gates, Gendon of Gatesville, and Tracy of Suffolk; three sisters Mary of Raleigh, Sadie of Waterbury, CT and Pamela of Gates.

Samuel Boone

CHAPEL HILL – Samuel Moyle Boone 89, of Chapel Hill, died Monday May 5th, 2008 at UNC Hospital.

Mr. Boone was a native of Gates County, NC, son of the late William Jordan and Minnie Belle Williams Boone. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was retired from UNC-CH Academic Affairs Library as librarian after 30 years of service, and went on to Duke University’s Perkins Library for 5 years.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Bates Boone; daughter, Dr. Nancy Anne Boone of Chapel Hill; and sister Mary E. Richardson of Powhatan, VA. He was preceded in death by his three brothers William J. Boone Jr., Sidney G. Boone and Roger H. Boone.

Memorial services were conducted at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 10, 2008 in Walker’s Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jamie Eubanks. The family received friends following the services.

She was employed at Narricott Industries in Boykins, Va.

Bernice S. Ford

MURFREESBORO – Bernice S. Ford, 69, a native of Hertford County, died May 8, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Ford was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

She was a retired 8th grade teacher at Ahoskie Middle School.

Survivors include one son, Zollie Ford of Mary Esther, FL; three daughters, Davonna Ford of Fayetteville, Shirley Ford of Colonial Heights, VA and Helen Ford of Murfreesboro; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William S. Bowser

CONWAY – William Scott “Buck” Bowser, 72, a native of Northampton County, died May 6, 2008 at his residence.

Bowser was retired as a forklift driver with Georgia-Pacific, Conway.

Cherry Johnson

WASHINGTON, D.C. n Cherry “Mama Cherry” Johnson, 96, a native of Bertie County, formerly of Roxobel, died May 5, 2008 at Doctor’s Community Hospital, Lanham, Md.

Survivors include her children, Linwood Johnson, Gladys Johnson, and Oliver Johnson all of

Washington, DC, Verlean Powell of Mitchville, MD; sisters, Margaret Whims and Bertha Bishop, both of Silver Springs; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and nine

great-great grandchildren.

Susan Hardy

PORT ROYAL, SC – Susan Martin Capehart Hardy, 96, a native of Bertie County, died May 8, 2008 at River Oaks Residential Care. She was the widow of Rev. John William Hardy.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Sunday at St. Helena Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the churchyard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Helena Preservation Trust, P.O. Box 1043, Beaufort, SC 29901. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Hardy was a member of St. Helena’s Episcopal Church since 1951, and was a co-author of the history of the Parish Church of St. Helena. She attended St. Mary’s School in Raleigh and was a 1933 graduate from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She worked with WPA and organized libraries for Bertie County Schools and was a librarian and teacher in Columbia, after her marriage. She was a Librarian at Beaufort Country Elementary Schools for many years. She was a member of Beaufort Benevolent Society, Beaufort County Historical Society, Beaufort Historic Foundation and Beaufort Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Hardy Campbell of Beaufort, SC and Susan Hardy Perkins of Fairfax, VA; one son, John William Hardy Jr. of St. Mary’s, GA; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Sybil Bazemore

WINDSOR n Sybil Ann Bazemore, 57, a native of Windsor, died May 8, 2008 at her home.

Miss Bazemore was a clerk at Pittman’s Pharmacy and a member of Siloam Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Clarene Asbell Bazmore; and a sister, Evelyn B. Castelloe, both of Windsor.

John W. Blythe

MURFREESBORO n John W. Blythe, 78, a native of Northampton County, died May 6, 2008 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church by the Rev. Luther Morris. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Blythe of Murfreesboro; six daughters, Patricia Davis of Murfreesboro, Lois Bradley of Griffintown, Joyce Johnson of Washington, D.C., Phyllis Eason of Clinton, MD, and Elma Washington of Ahoskie, Thelma Blythe of Murfreesboro; four sons, Walter Blythe of Colorado, David Blythe of Tillery, Alvin Blythe of Durham and Calvin Blythe of Murfreesboro; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
