Gerald W. Bray

ELIZABETH CITY – Gerald Winslow Bray, a native of Gates County, died April 26, 2008. He was the widower of Ellen Martiny.

Bray was educated in the public schools of Gates and Pasquotank counties and by Elon College, Mexico City College, Duke University and Purdue University. He was an educator having been a teacher, a counselor and as administrator at the elementary, secondary and college levels. In retirement he operated a mobile home park, was a fish farmer and a community volunteer.

Survivors include three sons, Lessell Martiny Bray of Carrollton, Ga., Gerald Zachary Bray of Hertford and Jeremy Winslow Bray of Durham; one sister, Dorothy Bray Thomas of Greensboro; and six grandchildren.

Gerald asks that no flowers or memorials be sent. In lieu thereof, please lend a helping hand to someone in need as often as thee can, if so led, think of Gerald when you help your neighbor. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Up River Friends Meeting House, 523 Up River Road, Belvidere. Charlie Jones Sr.

GATES n Charlie Jones Sr., a native of Gates, died April 27, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Claude Odom. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Sunbury, is in charge.

Survivors include five sons, Lenward Jones of Gates, Larry Jones of Gatesville, Charlie Jones Jr. of Hampton, Va., Curtis Jones of Brooklyn, NY and Johnny Jones of New York; two daughters, Fannie Langston of Gatesville and Edna Williams of Gates; 21 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Ruby S. Boothe

GATES n Ruby Smith Boothe, 73, April 25, 2008 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Bryan Johnson and the Rev. Timothy L. Hicks. Burial was in the Boothe family cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Henry T. Boothe; one son, Reginal Boothe of Suffolk; one brother, Willie Smith of Gates; and one grandchild.

Ada Felton

EURE n Ada Baker Harrell Felton, 76, a native of Hertford County, died April 28, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of George Leslie “Sam” Felton.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eure Christian Church by the Revs. Michael Brinkley and Wayne Gardner. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. The family will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Thursday for the possession to the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Mrs. Felton was a homemaker, and had worked at Family Foods of Gatesville. She was a member of Eure Christian Church and its Ladies Aid Society.

Survivors include three sons, Joe Felton of Gatesville, Gary S. Felton of Pendleton and Carroll Leslie Felton of Hobbsville; a sister, Laura Jean Harrell of St. Johns; three brothers, Hunter Harrell of Lakeland, FL, James Grayson Harrell and Donald S. Harrell, both of St. Johns; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mary Hardy

PATTERSON, NJ n Mary “Big Mama” Hardy, 94, a native of Bertie County, and formerly of Roxobel, died April 27, 2008.

She was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughters, Maude Bowser of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, Alice Brooks and Marjorie Lewis, both of Patterson; and sons, Leo Hardy of Patterson and Gilbert Cherry of Irvington.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Walton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilders Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

 

Charlie Clarke Sr.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. n Charlie Clarke Sr., a native of Northampton County, died April 26, 2008 at Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital.

Clarke was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Rich Square and retired core maker with Worthington, Inc.

Survivors include a son, Charles Clarke Jr. of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square, by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the Clarke family cemetery.

Charmaine S. Scott

BRONX, NY n Charmaine Stacy “Stacy” Scott, 35, a native of Harlem, NY, died April 20, 2008.

She worked at Cornerstone Medical Arts Building as substance abuse counselor in New York.

Survivors her daughters, Starr Scott of Bronx, and Latresse Scott of Bronx; her mother, Roselyn Scott of Newport News; her brothers, Frankie Scott of

Texas and Javone Scott of Newport News; her grandfather, Ray Bloom of

Washington, DC; and her grandmother, Joan Scott of Bronx.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Jerome Shoulars.

William C. Eason

WOODLAND n William Clayton “Luck” Eason, 77, a native of Northampton County, died April 28, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Eason was a deacon at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, and retired

press operator at Georgia Pacific in Ahoskie.

Survivors include his wife, Shirlene Hoggard Eason of Woodland; sons, Dred Eason

of Charlotte, Curtis Eason of

Charlotte, Laron Eason of Atlanta, GA, and Chon Eason of

Tillery; daughters, Patricia E. Smith of Courtland, VA, and Mary Parker of St. John; brother, Melvin Eason of Woodland; sisters,

Vivian Cooper, Joyce Eason, and Willie Eason all of New York, Wilma Johnson, Ora Smith, and Mary Walton, all of Woodland; Doris E. Chamblee of Ahoskie, Geraldine E. Covington of Oxon Hill, MD, and Helen Bellamy of Virginia Beach; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Dolores F. McClenney

MURFREESBORO n Dolores “Dee” F. McClenney, 63, died Monday, April 28, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She had been preceded in death by a brother, Henry Berger.

A devoted wife and mother, she was an avid gardener who enjoyed caring for the many birds who visited her yard. In her life, she touched many hearts.

Survivors include her husband, William B. McClenney of their home; two sons, Joe McClenney and his wife, Sherrie of Winterville and Hank and his wife, Stacey, of Washington; one daughter, Rhonda McClenney of Conway; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Berger of Wyoming and Kenny Berger of North Dakota; and one sister, Connie Nelson of North Dakota.

The family will be receiving friends at their home and have requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, may do so to the American Cancer Society, 4600 East West Highway, Suite 525, Bethesda, MD 20814 (specify pancreatic research).

WINDSOR n Lawrence Watson, 51, a native of Bertie County, died April 24, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. James Collins. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state to 1 p.m. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Watson was disabled.

Gloria Sauls

ROCKY MOUNT n Gloria Jean Sauls, 48, died April 30, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.

R. Wilson Minton

AHOSKIE n Ralph Wilson Minton, 72, of the 100 block of NC Highway 561 West, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie, NC.

He was a native of Bertie County, a son of the late Preston and Myrtle Hoggard Minton, a member of Sand Run Baptist Church, a retired volunteer Fireman Roxobel Fire Department, and the retired owner and operator of Minton’s Store.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Virginia Rawls Minton; three brothers, Carroll Minton and wife Pattie, Roxobel, NC, W.J. Minton and wife Ann, Cary, NC and Rubert Earl Minton and wife Carol, Carrolton, Va.; five nieces; and three nephews.

A celebration of Mr. Minton’s life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008 at Garrett Funeral Home Ashley Chapel, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Doug Spivey officiating. Burial will be in Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home. Flowers will be welcome or donations may be made to a favorite charity.
