Hunt defeats Bertie

WINDSOR – Blake Jones had three hits and four RBIs to lead Wilson’s Hunt High School past Bertie here Thursday night.

The Warriors topped the Falcons 8-2 in the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A baseball playoffs.

Hunt opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first frame. Jones had an RBI-triple and scored on a balk to account for the two marks.

The Warriors added four more runs in the top of the second.

Alex Howard had an RBI-double and scored when Dantrell Best reached on an error. Best scored when Jerome Richardson got aboard via a two-base error. Jones plated Richardson with an RBI-single that made it 6-0.

The final two runs for the visitors came in the top of the sixth when Jones had a two-run single.

Bertie scored its only two runs in the bottom of the seventh stanza.

Bryce Cullipher singled to center and went to third when Zeek Williams got aboard via an error. Cullipher scored on an Ethan Boller RBI-groundout.

Williams took third on the groundout and scored when Dakota Young reached on an error. Two strikeouts ended the game.

“We gave them runs early,” Bertie coach Randy Whitaker said. “We made a couple of errors and they got the momentum.

“Hunt got the hits and made the plays,” he said. “We didn’t quit and never gave up. Their pitching was also impressive.”

Bertie had five hits. O.J. Dobbin, Aaron Hoggard, Brent Bowen, Cullipher and Boller had one hit each.

Bowen started the game for the Falcons and pitched six and two-thirds of an inning. He allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out eight. Jake Dunlow tossed the other one-third of an inning and allowed two runs.

Bertie finished the season 8-16 overall.
