Freak mishap claims life

MILLENNIUM – An elderly woman tragically lost her life following a freak mishap here Sunday morning.

Margaret Cooke Adams, 73, of 110 Bruce Farmer Road in the Millennium community, was struck by her own empty vehicle and injured, which later resulted in her death.

The incident occurred at her son’s residence on Ray Farmer Road.

According to information obtained from the North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP), Adams apparently had pulled into her son’s driveway and failed to put the vehicle in park.

The vehicle, a 1988 Nissan pickup, then rolled backwards and onto Adams as she tried to get out of the truck.

&uot;She was attempting to exit the vehicle, when it began backing out of the driveway into the road,&uot; NCHP First Sergeant K.P. Pitts told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald.

Pitts continued, &uot;The driver fell out of the vehicle and the vehicle ran over her.&uot;

Adams was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where she later died from her injuries.

No one else was involved in the incident.
