Bertie announces makeup days

WINDSOR – Makeup days have been scheduled for those missed by students at Bertie High School when the school closed down two days this week due to a water main break.

Due to the shortness of the remainder of the school year, those days will be May 3 and May 31, both Saturdays.

According to information released from the Bertie County School System, dismissal will occur at 1 p.m. on those days to ensure students are served lunch before the end of the school day.

Sunday afternoon, a water main broke at the school, which caused massive leaks and flooding, forcing Bertie County Schools Superintendent Dr. Chip Zullinger to order school closed for the day on Monday.

The leaks were so extensive that they were unable to be fully repaired on Monday, so the school remained closed Tuesday as well.

Students returned to school as normal Wednesday after a temporary fix was made to the system.

A complete system overhaul will have to be made after school is out for the year to ensure continued functioning for the next school year.

Bertie County Schools Public Information Officer Brent Todd told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that the problem arose due to age of the system, which was part of the original infrastructure of the school when it was built in 1963.
