Alfred Benton Turner, Sr.

Colerain, NC Alfred Benton Turner, Sr., 75 died Monday March 24, 2008 at his home.

He was the son of the late Raleigh Clarence Turner and Mary Askew Turner and was born in Bertie County on May 24, 1932. He was a member of Ahoskie Freewill Baptist Church, a former member of the Mars Hill Lions Club, Woodman of the World and retired from the Trap Fire Dept.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sarah Conner Turner, two sons; Alfred Benton Turner, Jr. and his wife Amy S. Turner of Charlottesville,Va and Jacques Turner and his wife Melissa D. Turner of Colerain, grandchildren Benton Turner, Caroline Turner and Belle Turner, a sister Murrell Holloman of Ahoskie and a brother Robert C. Turner of Colerain.

He was predeceased by a brother Leroy Turner.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at the Ahoskie Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Arie E. Picot

RICHMOND, Va. – Arie Eliza Picot, a native of Hertford County, died March 22, 2008 at Henrico Doctor’s Forest Hospital.

She was a member of Mill’s Neck Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Estella Picot-Jeter of Richmond; one brother, William E. Picot Jr. of Como; two sisters, Lillian Picot of Como and Rosa Picot of Franklin, Va.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edward M. “Jimmie” Mitchell

LEWISTON WOODVILLE n Edward Madison “Jimmie” Mitchell, 68, of the 500 block of Jack Branch Road, died Monday, March 24, 2008, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Bertie County, a son of the late James Madison and Evelyn Stallings Mitchell.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lewiston, an Air Force veteran, and a farmer.

Left to cherish Jimmie’s memory is his wife, Ann Kepley Mitchell; a daughter, Angie Jilcott and husband Jimi of Conway, and their children, Haley and Haven Jilcott; a son, Jimmy Mitchell and wife, Brenda of Lewiston Woodville, NC and their children, Cody and Josh Mitchell and Dustin Spivey; a sister, Sue Henry of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother, Larry Mitchell of Harrellsville; and a great grandson, Seth Spivey.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Garrett Funeral Home-Ashley Chapel, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC with the Rev. Stephen Farmer officiating.  Burial will follow in Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery, Lewiston Woodville, with military honors.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and other times at the home.  Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to University Health Systems Hospice Care, P.O. Deloris L. Rooks

GASTON n Deloris Lashley Rooks, 60, died March 21, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at Cool Spring Baptist Church in Gaston by Bishop Wayne I. Welch Sr. and the Rev. Todd C. Davidson. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Lynette H. Peele

WINDSOR n Lynette Harrell Peele, 50, a native of Bertie County, died March 23, 2008 at Martin General Hospital, Williamston.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Church of God for All People, Windsor, by the rev. Joseph Watson. Burial will be in St. Paul Church Cemetery, Windsor. A wake fill be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor.

Gladys R. Berry

WINDSOR n Gladys Ryan Berry, 80, a native of Bertie County, died March 22, 2008 at home.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Tabernacle The Pillar of Fire, Windsor, by the Rev. Edward Conaway. Burial will be the Ryan Family Cemetery, Windsor. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Tabernacle Pillar of Fire, Windsor.

She was a CAN-1.

Fred D. Jordan

GATES n Fred Douglas Jordan, 76, died March 3, 2008 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral was conducted March 9 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Gates, by the Rev. James Brown. Burial was in the church cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Mary R. Jordan of the home; one daughter, Shelia Jordan of Hempstead, NY; one son, Douglas Jordan of Hempstead; two sisters, Helen Keene of Hampton, Va., and Ethelene Knight of Gates; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Kameron Mykil Perry

COLERAIN n Kameron Mykil “Ty” Perry, 3 months old, son of Takeyla Perry and LaTonya Ross, both of Colerain, died March 24, 2008 in Martinsville, Va.

Kameron was born in Pitt County.

Survivors include a brother, Demond Holey Jr. of Merry Hill; a sister, Titianna Ross of Colerain; grandmother, Annie Watford of Merry Hill; grandfather, Gregory Roscoe of Harrellsville; great-grandmothers, Hattie R. Perry of Ahoskie and Amy Rascoe of Murfreesboro; and grandparents, Titshia and Jerry Ross of Bassett, Va. 

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilder’s-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander, by Pastor Powell. 

Evelyn G. Adebiyi

COLUMBIA, MD n Evelyn George Adebiyi, died March 22, 2008 at Northwest Randall Town Hospital, Randall Town Md.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Woodville Plains Baptist Church, Woodville, by Brother Robert Walton. Burial will be in Weeping Mary Cemetery, Como. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Chadwick Adebiyi of Columbia; and one sister, Christine George of Columbia.

Effie M. Everett

AHOSKIE n Effie Mae Everett, died March 24, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church, Ahoskie by Rev. Paul Moore. Burial will be in Mill Neck Church Cemetery, Lewiston. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, James Everett of Lewiston and George G. Everett of Raleigh; one sister, Rosa Lee Myrick of Murfreesboro; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Harold D. Bell

NORFOLK, Va.

– Harold Davis &uot;Red Eye&uot; Bell, 79, a native of Norfolk County, died March 23, 2008.

Bell was a former member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Berkley. He was a member of Prince Hall Masons, Tidewater Chapter No. 106. He served in the U.S. Army where he received an honorable discharge in 1946. He retired from Fennell Trucking Co. Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Jones-Bell; four daughters, Alethia Johnson of Ahoskie, Michelle Brazwell of Suffolk, Shirley Riddick and Sabrina Rodgers, both of Norfolk; two sons, Quinton and Barry Moore, both of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carolyn Fuller of Wilmington.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St., by the Rev. Ray Vango. Interment will be at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Family and friends will assemble at 5920 Poplar Hall Drive one hour prior to service for procession to the chapel. Jessie B. Copeland

HERTFORD – Jessie Mae Byrum Copeland, 86, a native of Bertie County, died March 25, 2008, while at Bon Secours Maryview Nursing Care Center, Suffolk. She was the widow of Marion Lindsey Copeland.

She was a member of Hertford Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter, Charlie Copeland of Virginia Beach, Lindsey Copeland of Chesapeake, Linda C. Miller of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; a sister, Viola B. Pierce; and a brother, Manley Byrum, both of Windsor.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services, Hertford, and at other times, 488 Beech Springs Road, Hertford. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Cedar Wood Cemetery with the Rev. H. Gene Boyce.

Marian W. Nixon

EDENTON – Marian White Nixon, 71, died March 24, 2008 in her home.

Mrs. Nixon was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Murray Leon Nixon Sr.; six children, Murray Leon Nixon Jr., Jimmy Nixon, Louis Nixon, Ricky Nixon, Lynda Harrell, all of Edenton and Lisa Nixon of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Carolyn Ann Hufton and Kay Anderson, both of Edenton; two brothers, Joe White of Hobbsville and Ray White of Hertford; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mrs. Nixon’s life was held Wednesday in Rocky Hock Baptist Church with Dr. James Horton and Pastor Tracy Smith. Burial followed in the Nixon family cemetery. Carolyn Leary

WINTON n Carolyn Leary, 59, a native of Suffolk, Va., died March 23, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jordan Grove Baptist Church, Winton, by the Rev. Shearn. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a wake from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny Leary of Winton; one daughter, Mary Leary of Winton; and three brothers, Fred Wilson and Frank Charity, both of Winton and Robert Lee Charity of Washington, D.C.

Shirley M. Johnson

BROOKLYN, NY n Shirley Marie Johnson, 63, a native of Bertie County, died March 25, 2008 at Brooklyn Medical Center.

She was a member of First Baptsit Church of Crown Heights, NY and a chef for Michael Jordans Restaurant in NYC.

Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia J. McDade of West Haven, CT; brothers, Rudolph Johnson of New York, Frank Johnson of College Park, Md., Charles Johnson of Ahoskie, Amos Johnson of Weeksvile, Ga., Roger Johnson of Ahoskie and McCoy Johnson of Atlantic City, NJ; and sisters, Daisy Holley of Lewiston, Gertrude Pugh of Silver Springs, Daisy Johnson of Brooklyn, Vonnie Mae Johnson of Virginia, Viola Johnson of Newport News, Alice Johnson of Olney, Bonnie Jean Johnson of Detroit, MI, Lizzie Mohammad of Washington, D.C., and Pamela Johnson of Newport News.
