WINDSOR – Bertie High School’s Lady Falcons scored one run in the bottom of the first inning.

Fortunately, that’s all the softball squad from Windsor would need as they made that one run hold up through seven innings to defeat Currituck 1-0.

“I am very happy with my team,” veteran skipper Jackie Copeland said. “We respect Currituck because they are a good team.

“We are taking this season one game at a time,” she said. “I am proud of them.”

That one run was enough because junior left-hander Courtney Dunlow tossed a two-hit gem for Bertie, recording her fifth victory of the season. She struck out five in the process.

“I am happy with the win,” Dunlow said. “I was hitting my spots today, but I still have some things to work on. The defense played great behind me today.”

Sophomore Jody Mizelle scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the first inning. She drew a walk and advanced to second when Whitney Castelloe had a ground-out.

Mizelle advanced to third on a wild pitch before Dunlow drew a walk and stole second.

Mizelle scored on a Christie Brown RBI-groundout to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Currituck appeared to be threatening in the top of the third when Chelsea Kovach was thrown out at third after reaching on an error.

The Lady Knights had a final threat in the sixth when Megan Graham reached on an error and went to third on Rachel Bond’s single. A groundout ended the threat.

Bertie only managed three hits during the contest with Chelsea Dunlow, Courtney Dunlow and Kelly Cummings each going 1-for-2 for the afternoon.

Bertie (3-0) sits tied atop the Northeastern Coastal Conference standings with Edenton. Both are undefeated in league play. The Lady Falcons are 5-0 overall.
