Ersue Artis-Williams

PETERSBURG, Va. – Ersue &uot;Miss Tee&uot; Artis-Williams, died February 29, 2008.

Survivors include nine children; three sisters, Lessie Bynum of Philadelphia, Otelia Wiggins of Woodland, and Florine Pearson of Murfreesboro; one brother, Leroy Wiggins of Como; 53 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, and the Rev. Leroy Cherry, eulogist. Interment will be in Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery. J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., was in charge.

Robert L. Britton

LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – Robert Lee Britton, 95, of the 100 block of Mitchell Street, died Wednesday, March 05, 2008, in Golden Living Center, Greenville, NC.

Mr. Britton was born in Bertie County and was a member of First Baptist Church of Lewiston Woodville.  He was retired as a quality control supervisor with Harrington Manufacturing in Lewiston.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Frances Harrell Britton; two sons, R. Paul Britton of Greenville, NC, and Harold L. Britton of Wake Forest, NC; a sister, Mary Bazemore of Newport News, VA; and a granddaughter, Holly F. Britton of Greenville, NC.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2008, at Garrett Funeral Home-Ashley Chapel, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Al Hughson, officiating.  Burial will follow in Hoggard Memorial Cemetery, Lewiston-Woodville.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday, prior to services.  Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Lewiston-Woodville.

Fred D. Jordan

GATES – Fred Douglas Jordan, 76, died March 3, 2008.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Corapeake. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Donald Barris

RICH SQUARE – Donald “Buck” Harris, 54, a native of Hertford County, died March 3, 2008 at Rich Square Medical Center.

He was a member of Mill Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sisters, Ruth Harris of Roxobel, Catherine Johnson of Chesapeake, Va., Mary Wilder of Aulander, and JoAnn Harris of Virginia Beach; his brothers, Jessie “Dick” Harris, Melvin “Bay Bay” Harris, Donnel “Jack” Harris and Bennie “Pee Wee” Harris, all of Virginia Beach, James “Boosie Boy” Harris, and Willie McCoy Harris, both of Aulander, Johnny “Bro” Harris of Virginia Beach, Wilson “Doodle Bug” Harris of Burgaw, and Alphonso Daniels of Philadelphia, Pa.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home, Rich Square, by the Rev. Wayne I. Welch.

Alice Holloman

AHOSKIE – Alice Holloman, a native of Bertie County, died March 2, 2008 at Sentara Bayside Hospital, Virginia Beach, Va.

Mrs. Holloman was a member of Soul Saving Station.

Survivors include her husband, James Holloman of Ahoskie; two sons, Karlius Holloman and Marcus Holloman of Ahoskie; two daughters, Annette Senpell of Roswell, NM and Kathy Powell of Murfreesboro; three brothers, Eddie Heckstall of Brooklyn, NY and David Watford of Gates and Charlie Ray Watford of Pompano, FL; two sisters, Mary Wiggins of Murfreesboro and Almarie Edwards of Ahoskie; and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Soul Saving Station. Burial will be in the Watford family cemetery, Colerain. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mary Randolph

AHOSKIE – Mary Randolph, a native of Ahoskie, died March 4, 2008 at her residence.

She was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.  Mary retired from Ralph Yates Cleaners.  She was educated at RL Vann High School.

Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Allmond of Chesapeake, Va., and Mary Sessoms of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert D. Richardson III. Condolences may be sent to www.huntersfuneralhome.com.

Christianna B. Barnes

PENDLETON – Christianna Britt Barnes, 91, died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at her home. She had been preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, George T. Barnes.

A native of Northampton County, she was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed gardening and raising flowers and who stayed very involved in school activities when her children were young. Also, she was a member of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church in Pendleton where she had been active in many areas of church service.

Survivors include one daughter, Christie Barnes Vinson Murphy and her husband, Arthur W. Murphy, Jr. of Greensboro; one son, George Michael Barnes and his wife, Jenny Bain Barnes of Pendleton; six grandchildren, Sherri Bull and Aprille Stutts of Greensboro, Michael T. Barnes of Ahoskie, Jim Bain of Dinwiddie, VA, Justin Barnes and David Barnes of Pendleton; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, 2:00 P.M. at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. James Crocker presiding. Burial will follow in the Roberts Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Saturday from 7 to 8:30 P.M. and welcome flowers or memorial gifts given to Roberts Chapel Baptist Church.

Carolyn W. Buck

EURE – Carolyn Winn Buck, 60, a native of Richmond, VA, died March 5, 2008 at her home.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. John Rissmiller. Friends may join the family at the residence. It is asked that flowers be omitted and contributions in her memory be directed to the Albemarle Commission Meals on Wheels Program, PO Box 646, Hertford, NC 27944 or to the Ministry Program at Down East Health and Rehab, 38 Carter’s Road, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Mrs. Buck was a member of Abundant Hope Baptist Church, she had worked in the insurance billing department at Lakeview Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Buck; a daughter, Amy Lokey of Chesapeake; a son, Chris Cordova of Gates; a brother, Tommy Winn of Woodbridge; and four grandchildren.

Gary M. Riddick

GATES – Gary McCraigh Riddick, 23,

died March 2, 2008.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Gates County High School. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Alvin Slade Sr.

SUITLAND, MD – Alvin Lee “Bob” Slade Jr., died March 5, 2008 in Suitland.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Suitland. Interment will be in Washington National Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Marashall’s Funeral Home, 4308 Suitland Rd., Suitland, is in charge. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, supplied information.

Survivors include four children, Sandra Slade, Laurel Hope, Laverne Wright and Alvin Slade Jr.; three brothers, Clifton Slade, Denny Slade and L.C. Slade; and one sister, Althea Harrell, all of Maryland.

Elizabeth B. Hassell

COLERAIN – Mary Elizabeth Brown Hassell, 90 died March 6, 2008 at Roanoke Cowan Hospital.

She was the 7th of 9 children born to Archie and Dare Brown, in Jamesville, NC. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, past Worthy Matron of the Harrellsville chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was very active in her church and community. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband U.S. Hassell.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons; Butch Hassell and wife Sandra, Ahoskie, NC., Frank Hassell and wife Jane, Wilmington, NC., a sister; Margie Griffin, Williamston, NC., a granddaughter; Beth Hassell, Ahoskie, NC., and a great granddaughter, Rebecca Hassell, Gainesville, FL., and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Life memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Riverside Baptist Church NC Highway 45, Merry Hill, NC.

The family will receive friends at the Hassell home, and flowers are welcome or donations to University Health Systems Hospice Care, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC. 27910
