MERRY HILL – Lawrence Academy scored 10 runs in the second inning and rolled to a 13-3 win over Hobgood Academy here Thursday.

The Warriors, who improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Tarheel Independent Conference, started the scoring in the home half of the first frame.

After Chad Whitehead reached when he was hit by a pitch, courtesy runner Chase Elliot went to second on a wild pitch. Daniel Oliver then cleared the bases with a two-run shot to left-centerfield.

The Raiders answered with a run in the top of the second, but the Warriors blew the game open in the bottom of the same stanza.

Blake Hill led off with a single to right, but was erased when J.T. Lilley got aboard on a fielder’s choice. Dylan Ralph then walked before Joe Harrell loaded the bases with a bunt single.

Lilley scored the first of the 10 runs on a wild pitch, but Evan Holton drew a free pas to reload the bases.

Bud Bishop and Whitehead drew back-to-back walks to force in two runs and then Holton scored on a wild pitch.

Oliver drew a base on balls to reload the sacks with Warriors. T.J. Johnston then drilled a two-run single to center. Hill walked to load the bases again and then Lilley forced in a run when he drew a free pass.

Ralph had an RBI-single and then Harrell had a two-run single to give the Warriors a 12-1 lead after two innings.

Hobgood began to attempt to work their way back into the game with two runs in the fourth.

Neither team scored in the fourth and Hill ended the game with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the fifth frame.

The Warriors put together 11 hits led by Harrell, who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Hill was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Johnston was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Holton, Whitehead, Oliver and Ralph had one hit each.

Jonathan Brantley tossed two and one-third innings for the Warriors, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three. Oliver then pitched the final two and two-thirds. He allowed no runs and no hits and struck out five.

“We had a big second inning in which we had some big hits and some walks,” fourth-year Lawrence Head Baseball Coach Robert Kravitz said. “We showed discipline at the plate.

“This was a good conference win for us and will hopefully give us some momentum going into next week,” he added.
