Nona Stephenson

JACKSONVILLE – Nona &uot;Pat&uot; Lejoy Stephenson, 72, a native of Wake County, died February 25, 2008 in Jacksonville.

A memorial service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Central Baptist church cemetery, Poole Rd., Wendell.

Survivors include her husband, Jasper S. Stephenson of North Topsail Beach; daughter, Florient Candace Davis of Sneads Ferry; sons, Roy Glen Valentine of Murfreesboro and Richard Michael Valentine of Elizabeth, W.VA; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Rose Marie Moore of Fayetteville and Barbara Cain of Raleigh.

Strickland Funeral Home, Wendell, is in charge.

Lena C. Hughes

JACKSON n Lena Cooke Hughes, 88, a native of Roxobel, died February 28, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of Norman Bennett Hughes.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joe McLean. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Lions Club. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Mrs. Hughes was a member of Jackson United Methodist Church

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hughes Winslow of Blackstone, Va., and Mary Beth Hughes Tanner of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Brenda Clark

ROCKY MOUNT- Brenda Clark, 55, died February 27, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.

A visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Light of Peach Missionary Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Burial will be in New St. John Cemetery, Red Oak.

Maggie Pender

ROCKY MOUNT n Maggie Pender, 85, died February 27, 2008 at Nash General Hosptial.

A visitation will be held from 4-6 noon Sunday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Monday at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Burial will be in Northeastern Cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Thurman L. Lee

ROCKY MOUNT n Thurman L. Lee, 76, died February 26, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gethsemane Holiness Church, Battleboro. Burial will be in Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Calvin J. Britt

MURFREESBORO n Calvin Junior “Bud” Britt, 46, a native of Severn, died February 29, 2008 in Murfreesboro.

Britt was a member of Severn Baptist Church and was employed with Nucor Steel, Cofield.

Survivors include his wife, Olivia Edwards Britt of Murfreesboro; children, Sheila Britt, Monica Britt and Calvin Britt, all of Weldon; brothers, McCoy Britt Sr. and Alvin Britt Sr., both of Murfreesboro, Curtis Britt of Durham, Gregory Britt of Swans Quarter, and Thomas Jennings of Jackson; sisters, Ruth Hardy of Conway, Michelle Britt of Garysburg and Alice Parker of Rich Square; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square, by the Rev. Marvin McClean. Burial will be in the Bishop family cemetery, Murfreesboro. 

Annie W. Moore

COLERAIN n Annie Watford “Little Sister” Moore, 45, a native of Bertie County, died February 27, 2008 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mrs. Moore was an in Home Aide with Val’s Home Care.

Survivors include her mother, Lula Watford of Colerain; daughters, Dena Edwards of Colerain, Stacy Cutler of Powellsville and Geraldine Flood of Ahoskie; sons, Eugene Moore of Prince George, VA, and Terrence Moore of Powellsville; her grandmother, Mariah Parker of Brian Center, Windsor; brothers, Al Watford of Colerain, and Douglas Watford of Fort Dix, NJ; sister, Aruthretta Bond of Kelford and Juanita Moore of Suffolk; and 10 grandchildren. 

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Colerain by the Rev. Mary Drake. Burial will be in the Moore family cemetery, Powellsville. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Otha J. Hewitt

CONWAY n Funeral services for Otha Jay Hewitt, 77, who died February 20, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Richard Allen Chapel, AME Church by the Rev. Edward Sloan. Burial will be in the Hewitt family Cemetery, Allen Chapel. Jesse Hood Funeral Home is in charge.

Carol Ann Vaughan

HAMPTON, Va. n Carol Ann Vaughan, died February 28, 2008 at Sentara Careplex Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Moore Jr. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Lindsey George of Bettie and Shannon Antonio Jordan of Murfreesboro; three daughters, Kimberly Wiggins of Hampton, Takeisha Everette and Randrika Vaughan, both of Hampton; her parents, Loretta Cooper Carter of Hampton and Robert George of Merry Hill; one brother, Tony Morris of Maryland; one sister, Linda George of Hampton; and two grandchildren.

Willie Battle Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT n Willie Battle Jr., 83, died February 28, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.

James Richard

KILL DEVIL HILLS n James Richard, 47, a native of Dayton, Ohio, died February 26, 2008 in Kill Devil Hills.

Richard was a member of West Side Baptist Church, Harrisonburg, Va., and a system analyst with Merck Pharmaceutical Company.

Survivors include his mother, Arlene Richard of Murfreesboro; a son, Daniel Richard of Harrisonburg; a daughter, Shannon Richard of Harrisonburg; a two brothers, Michael Richard of Corinth, Miss., and Tom Richard of Bradenton, FL; and a sister, Michelle Richard of Murfreesboro.

A funeral will be conducted at Wilder’s Funeral Home, Rich Square, by the Rev. Vale Miller.

Willis E. Holloman

AHOSKIE – Willis Edward Holloman, 65, of Holloman Lane, died February 28, 2008

at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Holloman was a native of Bertie County, the son of the late Foy Ray and Bessie Ward Holloman, and was the owner Super Vac.

A Celebration of Mr. Holloman’s life will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 3, 2008 at Garrett Funeral Home Ashley Chapel 205 NC Highway 42 West Ahoskie, NC. with Rev. Jimmy Ward officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife; Margaret Byrd Holloman; two daughters, Holly House of Ahoskie and Pam Dunlow of Aulander; one son; Kirk Holloman of Ahoskie, NC; three grandchildren, Jessica White, Jennifer Hyatt and Jordan Hyatt.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 PM Sunday, March 2, 2008.

John Cox Sr.

JACKSON n John William “Billy” Cox Sr., 67, a native of Northampton County, died February 28, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Frank Stansberry. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson.

Survivors include one daughter, Natalie L. Kring of Raleigh; two sons, John W. Cox Jr. of Roanoke Rapids and Fletcher “Monty” Cox of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, James Cox and Bobby Cox, both of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Lillian Daniels of Myrtle Beach, SC and Pat Cox Haygood of Apex; six grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
