Sarah E. Hudson

POWELLSVILLE n Sarah Elizabeth Hudson, 80, died February 26, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Hazel Jones

JACKSON n Hazel Faye Bryant Jones, 62, died February 26, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mts. Jones graduated from Jackson High School and attended Chowan College, began her working career working half days with Mrs. Geneieve Gay, principal of Jackson Elementary School as secretary, and half days in the Clerk of Superior Court’s Office. She became a full time employee in the Clerk’s office in June 1966, where she remained until June, 1996, when she retired as an Assistant Clerk. She joined the Jackson Baptist Church.

Hazel was married June 30, 1967 to James Lewis “(Frog)” Jones.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jackson Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe McLean and Rev. Billy Howell. Massey Funeral Home in Jackson is in charge.

In Lieu of flowers, Hazel prefers memorial contributions be made to Jackson Baptist Church, P.O. Box 445, Jackson, N.C. 27845 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Edward T. Hollowell Jr.

SEABOARD, NC – Mr. Edward Thomas Hollowell, Jr., age 53 died at the Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids on Monday, February 25, 2008.

Mr. Hollowell was a lifetime resident of Northampton County.

He graduated from Northampton County High School and North Carolina State University with a Batchelor of Science Degree in Animal Science.

He was married to Ann Bacon in 1973 and to them was born two wonderful children.

Mr. Hollowell was a member of the Severn United Methodist Church.

He owned and operated Hollowell Family Farms, raising hogs, cattle and prawns.

Along with his love for his work, he had a deep love and passion for his wife, children and family.

Survivors include his mother and father, Edward T. Hollowell and Lenelle Fuller Hollowell of Rich Square, NC, his wife Ann Bacon Hollowell of the home, one daughter, Lucy Hollowell and one son, Jason Hollowell both of the home.

Also surviving are two sisters, Cathy Hollowell of Rich Square and Martha H. Welch and her husband Alva of Snow Hill, NC, three brothers, Frank Hollowell and his wife Susan of Hurdle Mills, NC, Eric Hollowell and his wife Linda of Falls Branch, TN and Tim Hollowell and his wife Paula of Rich Square, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, February 28 at 11A.M. at the Chapel of Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square with the Rev. Austin Anderson officiating.

The interment will follow at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square. The family will receive friends following the service at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Severn United Methodist Church, 2010 Severn Road, Margarettsville, NC.

Knowledge Salsbury

AHOSKIE n Knowledge “Knot” Salsbury, 74, a native of Bertie County, died February 22, 2008 at his residence.

Salsbury was a retired truck driver at North Carolina Dept. of Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Askew of the home; goddaughter, Niasha Outlaw of Princeville; and two sisters, Agnes Wiggins of Powellsville and Estelle Littles of Aulander.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square, by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in the Saulsbury family cemetery, Hexalena Road.

Maryland F. Harrell Sr.

GATES – Maryland Forehand Harrell Sr., 75, a native of Chowan County, died February 25, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk.

Harrell attended both Louisburg and Chowan colleges and had served in the United States Coast Guard. Retired from Hercules Powder Co., he was a retired member of the Gates Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the Gates Ruritan Club. He was also a member Reynoldson Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Florence Eure Harrell; two sons, Maryland F. Harrell Jr. of Gates and Brent D. Harrell of Sunbury; a daughter, Monica H. Spivey of Sunbury; three sisters, Paulette H. Eure of Suffolk, Sandra H. Mitchell-Rose of Gates and Kay H. Stewart of Poquoson; two brothers, Carlton Harrell of Gates and Bobby Harrell of Sedley; and eight grandchildren;

A funeral will be conduted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Revs. Todd Higginson and Billy Presley. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, is in charge. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church following services and all other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 281 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462, the Gates Volunteer Fire Dept., Gates, NC 27937 or the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Ben J. Morris

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Ben J. Morris, formerly of Ahoskie, died February 23, 2008.

Survivors include his sons, Kyle Morris of Wilson, Alan Morris and Billy Morris of Ahoskie and Stephen Morris of San Antonio, daughters, Linda M. Jones and Pat M. Rawls of Aulander and Dianna M. Richey of Conway; a sister, Evelyn M. Harmon of Edenton; fourteen grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 29, 2008 at Ahoskie Cemetery.

Thurman Lee

BATTLEBORO n Thomas L. Lee, 76, died February 26, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.

AHOSKIE n Sarah Elizabeth Hudson, age 80, of Ahoskie, NC, died February 26, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Sarah was born May 2, 1927 in Northampton County. She was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtle Elizabeth Drew and father, William David Hagwood. She was a loving wife, friend and sister.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Charles Hudson of Ahoskie, NC; two sisters, Edith Gurganus of Beargrass, NC and Mary Coggins of Murfreesboro, NC. Also many loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held, Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Stoney Creek Cemetery in Ahoskie, NC with the Rev. Robert May officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Wednesday, February 27, 2008 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC.

Esther Griffin Piland

MARGARETTSVILLE n Esther Griffin Piland, 88, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Wake Med in Raleigh. She had been preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Piland, a son, Wayne Piland, her parents, Walter and Sadie Vincent Griffin, a sister, Catherine Griffin, and a brother, David Griffin.

A native of Southampton County, Virginia, she was a caring wife and mother and her working career included driving a school bus and school food service in Northampton County. Also, she enjoyed working in her church and helping her neighbors.

Survivors include a son, A.C. Piland and his wife, Mary of Conway; four grandsons, Andy, Ed, Lee, and Russ; two granddaughters, Sherrie and Lynn; and four great-granddaughters, April, Alicia, Megan, and Merindy

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 29, 2 p.m. in Margarettsville Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Glover presiding. Burial will follow in the Boykins, Va., cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends, Thursday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway and other times at the A.C. Piland family home.

ROCKY MOUNT n Maggie Pender, 85, died February 27, 2008 at Nash General Hospital.
