Rev. Haywood L. Harrell

Goldsboro n Rev. Haywood L. Harrell, a resident of the Pines, died on Monday, February 11, 2008.  He was a native of Rich Square, NC in Northampton County.  He was born on April 4, 1913 to the late K.L. (Dock) Harrell and Blanche Peele Harrell.  Rev. Harrell married, on November 15, 1939, the late Dorothy Stallings Harrell of Durham, NC and they were married for 64 years.  They served 38 years in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church in 38 churches.  He retired in 1977.  Rev. Harrell received his ministerial education at Duke University and Duke Divinity School.

 Early in his ministry, Rev. Harrell dedicated himself to serving churches of small membership, to help the members feel that they were just as important in the Lord’s Kingdom as those in the large churches.  He believed a pastor was just as important as a preacher and devoted his life to both missions.  Rev. Harrell loved all of his people and he was a tireless visitor in their homes.  He had a keen and wholesome sense of humor and used it to lift the spirits of all who knew his friendship.

 He initiated 13 building programs from Sunday School rooms to new sanctuaries, and served 17 years in the conferences assemblies, camps and conferences.  He taught family life conferences for 35 years throughout eastern North Carolina.  Most courses were for senior high students on “Preparation for Marriage.”  He was certified by the Methodist Board of Education in Nashville, TN.  Rev. Harrell was a member of the North Carolina Family Life Council and the National Family Life Council.  He authored several programs for Program Quarterly, which was the youth program quarterly for churches with small youth groups in the Methodist Church.  He served as president and vice-president of the Methodist Rural Fellowship of the Conference.  He attended conferences in Lincoln, Nebraska; Chicago, Illinois; Bloomington, Indiana; Emory University and several at Lake Junaluska, NC.  All were in the field of rural church and family life.

 Rev. Harrell is survived by a daughter, Genette H. Tate and husband, Walter; two sons, Linwood E. Harrell and wife, Brenda of Fuquay-Varina, NC and Ernest S. Harrell and wife, Diane of Kinston, NC; five grandchildren, Denise Poole and husband, David of Raleigh, NC, Donna Tillman of Pikeville, NC, Dianne Wiley of Pensacola, FL, Gina Harrell Barbour and husband, Mark of Fuquay-Varina, NC and Christopher Harrell of Florida; three great-grandchildren, Thomas Poole of Raleigh, NC, Katie Stilley of Pikeville, NC and Michael Stone of LaGrange, NC; his sister-in-law, Ruth B. Harrell of Raleigh; and several nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by his sisters, Meeter H. Todd and Flossie H. Brown; his brothers, Stanley Harrell and Grover Harrell; and his grandson, J.B. Tillman.

 The family received friends Wednesday at Seymour Funeral Home from 7:00 n 9:00 p.m.   Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Martin Armstrong, Rev. T.C. West and Rev. McGee Creech officiating.  Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery near Seven Springs.

Doris Harrell

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. n Doris Marquetta Banks “Quette” Harrell, died February 9, 2008 in Philadelphia.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mediator Lutheran Church. Pennick Funeral Home, Philadelphia, 2312 W. Montgomery Ave., is in charge. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, supplied information.

Survivors include five children, Janet, Keith, Demetrious, Alicia and Glenn; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mildred B. Tyler

Mildred Brown Tyler, 89, formally of Margarettsville, NC, passed away February 12, 2008 in Richmond, Va. Mildred was the widow of Marion L. Tyler. She was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the daughter of the late James E. and Iva Wheeler Brown. She was predeceased by a sister, Louise Kane and brother, James Q. Brown.

Mildred was survived by two daughters, Betty Tyler and husband, Albert Barnes of Richmond, Va., and June Davis and husband, Everette Davis of Rockville, Va.; her brother, Allen Brown of Macon, GA; two grandchildren, Jackie Pufky and husband, John of Rolesville, NC, William Davis of Rolesville, Va.; great-grandchild, Gavin Pufky of Rolesville, NC; and several nieces and a nephew.

Julian Tippette

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Julian Edward Tippette, 91, died February 12, 2008.

Tippette was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Enfield. He was also a member of Royal Whiteheart Lodge II for 50 years.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. Susan Joyce. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids. The family will receive friends Friday at 1 p.m., one hour prior to services.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma R. Tippette of Roanoke Rapids; his son, Edward D. Tippette of Roanoke Rapids; a brother, “B.B.” Tippette of Enfield; and two sisters, Beulah Neville of Smithfield and Mary Elizabeth Stewart of Florida.
