GATES – In an unusual occurrence, a woman was airlifted directly to the hospital from the scene of an accident near here Sunday afternoon.

Annie Bell Jones, 87, of Hopewell, Virginia was traveling south on Folly Road when she ran off the road and hit a culvert.

According to Trooper M.T. Bryan of the North Carolina Highway Patrol (Troop A District II), Jones, driving her 1999 Ford Taurus station wagon, allegedly drove around a curve too fast and that caused her to run off the road.

Jones was severely injured in the collision.

&uot;She was trapped in the vehicle and her foot was nearly completely amputated by the brake pedal because the car had launched up on the front end up in the air and then slammed on the ground,&uot; Bryan stated.

There were no passengers in the vehicle at the time except for a small dog that was unharmed.

Jones had to be extricated out of her car by Gates County firemen.

The accident occurred at 3:04 p.m. and the Nightengale helicopter flew in to airlift Jones to the hospital in Norfolk, Virginia a short while after that.

Bryan says Jones’ daughter reports she had a broken arm, leg and neck as a result of the accident.
