WINDSOR – A three-vehicle collision here Monday morning left all vehicles totaled and the three drivers being sent to the hospital.

The incident occurred at 9:49 a.m. on US 17 (South King Street).

According to the police report, a vehicle driven by Matthew Thurman Jernigan had stopped in the roadway to turn left onto Lancaster Avenue.

Apparently, the vehicle behind Jernigan did not see he had stopped and hit his 1999 Ford truck from the rear.

That vehicle, a 1998 Honda passenger car driven by Davon Lamar Modlin, was estimated to have been traveling at approximately 45 miles per hour when the collision occurred.

A witness behind Modlin’s vehicle stated afterward that there was no application of brakes prior to the accident.

The collision pushed Jernigan’s truck into the other lane of traffic, where it was struck by yet another vehicle.

The third party involved, a 2006 Kia driven by Sheila Sessoms Perry, struck Jernigan’s truck on the front right side, causing it to further spin until it finally came to rest in the northbound lane.

Perry’s vehicle then veered off the road to the right and came to rest at the corner of South King Street and Lancaster Avenue.

All three drivers were transported to Bertie Memorial Hospital via different rescue squads, but none were seriously injured according to Windsor Police Chief Rodney Hoggard.

Modlin, 21, of Battleboro, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid colliding with another vehicle, a class C misdemeanor.

Hoggard warned that these types of accidents could be avoided by people simply paying more attention.

&uot;When people get on the highway, they need to pay attention to their driving, even in ideal conditions, instead of everything around them,&uot; he stated.

Road conditions Monday morning, however, were not ideal as the roads were wet.

Traffic was held up along US 17/South King Street nearly two miles each way for about an hour and a half while the accident scene was cleared.
