John L. Pugh

RICH SQUARE n John Lee “Bean Pie” Pugh, 40, a native of Hertford County, died January 30, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square, by the Rev. William Demery. Burial was in the Tann family cemetery.

Pugh was a member of Berean Baptist Church, Ahoskie.

Survivors include his wife, Se’Quanya Tann Pugh of Rich Square; his mother, Geraldine Pugh of Rich Square; sisters, Shirlene P. Smallwood, Clementine P. Muhamaad, and Iris Lisa Pugh, all of Rich Square, Barbara Jean Pugh Demery and Cookie Ann Pugh, both of Lewiston; brothers, James Earl Pugh and Mickey Pugh, both of Lewiston; and grandparents, Mozella Pugh Smith of Jackson and Wray F. Hunter of Jackson.

Jessie K. Futrell

AULANDER n Jessie Kelly Futrell, 62, a native of Hertford County, died February 1, 2008 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk,Va.

Futrell had retired from Bennett Box Company, Ahoskie.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Gatling Futrell of Aulander; sons, Deshawn Futrell and Jessie Jerome, both of Aulander; daughters, Patricia Ann Futrell and Sherite Shanita Futrell, both of Aulander, and Lashonda Futrell of Ahoskie; brothers, Willie Futrell of Aulander and James Futrell of Woodland; sisters, Estella Futrell and Josie Mae Early of Rich Square, Lillie Mae Horton of Washington, D.C., Dorothy Futrell Harris of Aulander; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square, by the Rev. Ronald Dolberry. Burial will be in the Wilder’s Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander.

 

Alliysia S. Harrell

ROXOBEL n Alliysia ShaKia Harrell, 2-years-old daughter of Dearra Howard of Roxobel and Douglas Harrell of Aulander, died February 1, 2008 at Duke University Hospital, Durham.

Alliysia was a native of Hertford County.

Other survivors include her grandparents, Linwood Lopez Howard Jr. of Aulander, Annie Delores Flythe of Roxobel and Jennifer Knight of Aulander; great-grandparents, Wilbur and Clara Howard of Aulander, John and Caldonia Bush of Paterson, NJ, and Catherine Harrell of Aulander; great-great-grandparents, Virginia Jones and Janie Lee Leary, and great-great-grandparents, Sarah Howard of Aulander and Gladys Chamblee of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square. Burial will be in the Wilder’s Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. 

 

Montavio D. Privott

COLERAIN n Montavio DaVeon Privott, one-month-old son of Stephanie Privott of Colerain and Zacharias Savage, died January 31, 2008 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Other survivors include brothers, Deondre Vinson, Christopher Vinson, DeJounte Vinson and Taevon Savage; sisters, Iyana Beacher and Alexandria Freeman; and grandparents, Shirley and Joe Sessoms, Wayne and Carol Privott and Etherlean White.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. Robert Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge. 

 

Zackary T. Lassiter

WINTON n Zackary Tay’Von Lassiter, one-day-old son of Tesia Lassiter of Winton and Erick Reed, died February 2, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Other survivors include brothers, Xzaviah Lassiter of Winton and Eric Reed Jr. of Murfreesboro; grandparents, Lisa Lassiter of Courtland, Va., William Alexander of Charlotte and Sandra Reed of Murfreesboro; and great-grandmother, Marie Lassiter of Winton.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at South Winton Cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge. 

 

Mary Thomas

AHOSKIE – Mary Elizabeth Warner Thomas, 81, a native of New Orleans, lived in Ahoskie two years, died January 30, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Thomas was a member of Jesus Christ Apostolic Lighthouse Church in New Orleans, and retired from Bell Chase State School, New Orleans.

Survivors include her husband, Leon Thomas of Ahoskie; children, Gerald Thomas of Georgia, Johnny Thomas of Texas; Elon Thomas of Ahoskie, Patricia Thomas of Ahoskie, Lynette Kelly of Virginia, Lynyette Webb of New Orleans, Eltroyce Taylor of Lafayette, LA, Charmaine James of New Orleans, Daniel Smith of Ahoskie, Shawanda Jefferson of Ahoskie, Willie Thomas of New Orleans, Juanita Luchion of Mapleton, Willie Thomas of New Orleans, Juanita Luchion of Mapleton, Eltroyce Moore of Murfreesboro and Tamara Smith of Georgia; a sister, Sadie Cooke of New Orleans, LA; a brother, Robert Warner of New Orleans; 45 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jesus Christ Apostolic Lighthouse Church in New Orleans, LA, by Pastor Ronnie Stewart. Burial will be in Westlawn Park Cemetery, Gretna. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Ella Futrell

CONWAY n Ella Mae Nelson Futrell, 90, died Sunday, February 3, at Rich Square Health Care Center in Rich Square. She had been preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William Elliotte Futrell, her parents, Edward Cleveland and Ida Sumner Nelson, and four brothers, Norman Edward Nelson, Stanley Lee Nelson, Lokie Fleetwood Nelson, and Lokie Fleetwood Sumner Nelson.

Mrs. Futrell was retired from Talon Manufacturing Co. where she worked as a Quick Repair Operator, and she was a member of Conway Baptist Church where she held a 13 year perfect attendance record and taught in the Primary Department for over 38 years. Also, she was a member of the Lottie Moon Missionary Group which later became a part of the Nellie Deloatch Group. Her other memberships include the Conway Womans Club and the Reedy Branch Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Clonnie Futrell Reynolds and her husband, Johnny; a son, Jimmy Nelson and his wife, Karen; two brothers, James E. Nelson and Jesse Nelson, all of which are of Conway; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 2:00 P.M. in Conway Baptist Church with Rev. Willie McLawhorn and Rev. Bob Rogers presiding. Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway, Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at her daughters’ home. They welcome flowers for Mrs. Futrell’s service or donations can be made to University Health Systems Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

McEll Costen Sr.

SUNBURY n McEll Costen Sr., 80, a native of Gates, died January 31, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. John AME Zion Church by the Rev. Samuel Buck. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Costen of Sunbury; five sons, McEll Costen Jr., Darin Costen, and Vernon Costen, all of Sunbury and Timothy Bowser of Colerain and Samuel Bowser of Sunbury; one daughter, Otelia Riddick of Elizabeth City; a host of grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William A. Harrell

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – William Acree Harrell, 85, a native of Bertie County, died February 2, 2008, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. He was the widower of Irene S. Harrell.

Harrell served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church for many years.

Survivors include sisters-in-law; nieces; and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by Pastor Gene Primm.

James M. Russell

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – James Monroe Russell, 89, a native of Ahoskie, died February 1, 2008. He was the widower of Doris M. Russell.

Russell was a member of Victory Boulevard Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanette Martin of Portsmouth and Vivian Gearheart of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Richard M. Russell of Portsmouth; a sister, Lillian Skittlethorpe of Edenton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. John Robertson. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Arthur Sharpe

MANHATTAN, NY n Arthur Sharpe, died January 27, 2008 at New York Presbyterian, Manhattan.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Luvenia Sharpe of New York, NY.

Jack Britt

MILWAUKEE n Jack Britt, 85, a native of Northampton County, died February 3, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany United Methodist Church, Milwaukee, by the Rev. Sid Collins. Burial will be in Milwaukee Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the family home. They welcome flowers for his service or donations to the Bethany Memorial Fund, 1612 Doolittle Mill Road, Conway, NC 27820.

Britt co-owned a service station in the Milwaukee Community for 16 years and, then, joined the Mutual of Omaha Company selling insurance. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and was a Veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific with the United States Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Vinson Britt of the home; two sons, Barry Jackson Britt of Raleigh and Ronnie Vinson Britt of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Carl R. Britt and Charles A. Britt, both of Milwaukee and James E. Britt of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Claudie B. Dixon of Murfreesboro and Elizabeth B. Blowe of Ahoskie; and four grandchildren.

Jacqueline Reaves

GASTON n Jacqueline Reaves, died February 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
