Bertie ladies beat Currituck

WINDSOR – Bertie High School put three in double figures Friday night.

The Lady Falcons varsity girls’ basketball team used those three performances to defeat visiting Currituck 61-44.

Tierra Brown scored 17 points while Montressa Perry added 13 and Devona Bond added 11 to help the Falcons improve to 3-2 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

Currituck led 6-5 in the early going, but Bertie got four consecutive points from Satora Swain and then scores from Bond and Brown to edge ahead 13-8.

Following a Lacey Nelson hoop for Currituck, BHS finished the first quarter on a 5-0 run with scores by Brown and Bond. They led 18-10 after one quarter.

Yashanti Bridgers opened the second quarter with a hoop and a free throw to go ahead 21-10 and then she scored again moments later to keep the Falcons up by 11.

Brown sparked a 7-0 run for the Falcons midway through the second quarter that helped the home team move in front 30-15.

Despite a comeback effort from the Knights, the Falcons held a commanding 40-23 lead at halftime.

Bond and Brown opened the third quarter with back-to-back hoops to push the Bertie lead over 20 (44-23) with 7:27 to play in the period.

An exchange of hoops left the home-standing Falcons with a 51-29 lead after three quarters.

Currituck had the first four points of the final quarter, but Bridgers answered for Bertie.

The Lady Knights managed a 6-0 spurt with hoops from Jessica Meldinger, Ashley Craft and Ashley Basnight to get within 55-39, but the Lady Falcons held on for the easy victory.
