AHOSKIE – Two Bethel Christian Academy athletes were involved in an automobile accident Thursday night.

Megan Simons and Josh Freeman were in a vehicle that reportedly pulled into the path of an oncoming car moments after their Bethel Christian teams played at Ahoskie Christian School.

“At times like this we remember basketball is not very important,” Bethel Athletic Director Edith Williford said. “What is important is that both of our young people are going to be okay.

“You can replace vehicles, but you cannot replace young people,” she continued. “Thankfully, things look well for both of them.”

According to a report filed by the Ahoskie Police Department, Simons was driving a 2005 Ford on Kiwanis Street and came to a stop at the Memorial Drive intersection. She proceeded to attempt to cross the highway and did not see an oncoming vehicle.

That vehicle, a 1997 Chevrolet driven by Ciara Britt, 21, of Ahoskie could not stop and hit the side of Simons’ vehicle.

According to APD Major Jimmy Asbell, Britt, Simons and Freeman were all transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Britt and Simons were treated and released, but Freeman was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

A spokesman from Pitt said Freeman was listed in good condition as of late Friday afternoon.

According to the report, damages for Simons’ vehicle were estimated at $10,000 while damages to Britt’s vehicle were estimated at $9,000.

Simons was charged with a safe movement violation.
