James R. Lewis

HARRELLSVILLE – James R. Lewis, 59,

a native of Hertford County, died November 22, 2007 at his residence.

Lewis was a member of New Harrellsville Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

He was a retired farmer

Survivors include four brothers, William C. Lewis of Wilson, Horace E. Lewis of Philadelphia, Pa., Cecil M. Lewis of Harrellsville and Derrick Lewis of Washington, D.C.;

and four sisters, Carolyn L. Privott, Mollie L. Collins and Wanda Leary, all of Harrellsville, and Viola Lewis of Wilson.

A funeral was conducted Monday at New Harrellsville Chapel Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Leroy Archer. Burial will be at the church cemetery, Harrellsville, NC.

Harry Grohsman

MURFREESBORO n Harry Louis Grohsman, 64, died Friday, November 23, 2007, at his home near Murfreesboro. A native of New Jersey, he had been employed by Schneider National, Inc. as a tractor trailer driver. During the 9-11 tragedy, he volunteer to pull loads of supplies into New York City from New Jersey and also stayed there to help all he could.

His dream was to settle into country life, and he and his family moved to North Carolina where he was truly happy. Harry never met a stranger and everyone he met he befriended wholeheartedly. He was best known as one willing to share whatever he had with others. He lived and enjoyed life to the fullest and accomplished everything he could in the time God had given him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Patti Lou Mansfield Grohsman of their home. He is also survived by two daughters, Krista and Stephanie, his only granddaughter, Ashley Marie Maita, his beloved brother, Frank Grohsman of New Jersey; and his faithful companion, Hercules.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 28, 7:30 P.M. at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., 605 West Main St., Conway with Rev. Bob Richardson and Pastor Sandy Outlaw presiding.

WINDSOR n Wes “Raleigh Boy” Thompson, 60, died November 17, 2007 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Gilliam Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Victor M. Mitchell

WASHINGTON, D.C. n Victor McCoy Mitchell, 49, of 5615 N. Capital St., NW, a native of Ahoskie, and formerly of Hexalena, NC, died November 21, 2007 in Sussex County.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Conoconary Missionary Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Robert Horton. Burial will be in the Mitchell Family Cemetery, Hexalena, NC. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge of arrangements.

Mitchell was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Washington, D.C., Sunday School Superintendent at Mount Pleasant, Book Store Manager for the Progressive National Baptist Convention, treasurer of the Church Training union of the Mount Bethel Baptist Association. He was a Pharmacy Manager with Giant Food Stores #378, Washington, D.C.

Survivors include his father, Cleveland “Buck” Mitchell; sisters, Etta Delois Mitchell of Plymouth, NC, Brenda M. Hills of Winston-Salem, NC and Vernice M. Coley of Asheboro, NC; brothers, Bernard Mitchell Sr. of Wilson, NC, Roland Mitchell and William Mitchell, both of Charlotte, NC, Larry Mitchell of Ahoskie, NC, Michael Mitchell of Winston-Salem, NC; and his aunts, Evelyn S. Mitchell of Ahoskie, NC and Annie W. Roulhac of Williamston, NC.

Dorothy W. Britton

Conway, NC- Mrs. Dorothy Wade Britton, age 86, of Conway, NC died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

 Mrs. Britton was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Walter Wade and Clarine Woodard Wade.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Jim Ealey Britton and two brothers, W.T. Wade Sr. and James Wade.

 Mrs. Britton graduated from Conway High School and continued her education at East Carolina University at Greensboro and received her Master’s Degree from East Carolina University at Greenville.  She taught for the Weldon School system for thirty years. After retirement from the Weldon Schools she substituted for the Northampton County School system for ten years.

 Mrs. Britton was a devoted member of Zion United Methodist Church at Conway.  She taught Sunday School, was a member of the church choir, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.  She was a member of the Conway Women’s Club and a member of the Pine Forest Rest Home Auxiliary where she was very active.

 Survivors include several nieces, nephews and many friends.

 Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007 at 2:00 PM at

Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Sidney Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Conway Cemetery.

 The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

 Flowers are welcomed, however those wishing to make a memorial contributions should be made to Zion United Methodist Church.

Sadie Sharp

NORFOLK, Va. n Sadie Irene Sharp, died November 23, 2007 at Harbour Pointe Medical Center & Rehabilitation.

A memorial service will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Harrellsville.

She is survived by a brother, Rev. Dr. James B. Sharp of Chesapeake, Va.

Oliver Cowans

COMO n Oliver Cowans, died November 21, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Severn Baptist Church by the Rev. Elijah Barnes. Burial was in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Cowans of Como; three sons, James and Melvin Cowan and Oliver Grant; four sisters, Mable Rodgers, Luella Blair, Evelyn Perkins and Zelma Everette, all of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Marie T. Faison

LEWISTON n Marie T. Faison, 68, a native of Hertford County, died November 23, 2007 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Haven Baptist Church by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include five children, Walter A. Bell of Westchester, Pa, Richard Bell, Christopher C. Bell, Phillip M. Bell and Phillip Bell Jr., all of Murfreesboro; two brothers, William C. Tyler of Philadelphia and James Tyler of Murfreesboro; three sisters, Mildred Fleetwood and Annette Beale, both of Murfreesboro and Rosa T. Pope of Como; and seven grandchildren.

Margaret Giblert

DURHAM:

Margaret Edith McLeod Gilbert died on Saturday November 24, 2007, at Hillcrest Convalescent Home in Durham, NC, at the age of 90; her family will miss her tremendously and are all so grateful for her life of dedication to her family. She was born in Moore County, NC, to Martin and Sallie McLeod on Novem-ber 4, 1917, where she grew up on a farm with her seven siblings.

She attended the local Farm Life School and Flora McDonald College, graduating from college in 1938.

Margaret married John J. Gilbert (a confirmed bachelor at the time!) in 1940 in Wash-ngton, NC, where she had started her teaching career in home economics.

During adult life, Margaret lived in the North Carolina towns of Washington, Plymouth, Ahoskie, and Dur-ham, being in Durham since 1964.

Margaret and John rais-ed three children and encouraged and supported them as they all acquired college de-grees and began families of there own.

She cared for her husband John for 25 years after he was completely disabled by a series of strokes; at the same time she was also working two jobs and caring for the children.

Margaret retired in 1978 after teaching school for 40 years.

In retirement, she enjoyed some travel in the USA and abroad (visited Scotland, Israel, Nova Scotia, and Puerto Rico), baking sourdough bread for delivery to friends and the sick and bereaved, sewing, making and dressing ceramic dolls ( many given to her grandchildren), and making ceramics of all types ( including full nativity

scenes for each of her children and grandchildren). She was an active member and officer in the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association, an active member of Trinity Ave Presbyterian Church, regularly attending Sunday school and worship, and an active member and officer in the Presbyterian Women of the Church.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband and seven siblings.

She is survived by her three children, John J. Gilbert, Dr. Sarah G. Allen, and William P. Gilbert; her nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held at Clements Funeral Home on November 26, 2007, from 6 till 8 pm, and the funeral service will be conducted at Trinity Ave Presbyterian Church on Tues-day November 27, 2007, at 2 pm, with interment to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC.
