Northeast sweeps Community

WILSON – Northeast Academy swept a pair of varsity basketball games here Monday.

The Eagles’ varsity boy’s team scored 19 points in the first and last quarters as they knocked off Community Christian School 71-60.

Northeast led 19-12 after the first period of play and pushed their advantage to 37-21 by halftime. Community rallied to outscore the Eagles 16-15 in the third quarter, but the game got no closer as Northeast pulled away for their first victory of the 2007-08 campaign.

Brandon Futrell led three scorers in double figures with 16 points. Jeremy Parker had 12 and John Pope added 10 points.

The Eagles got nine from Jud Smith, eight from Jay Baugham and seven from Parker Brown. Jeff White rounded out the scoring with four points.

Diamond Steele led Community Christian with 15 points.

The Eagles are 1-0 on the season.

In the varsity girl’s contest, Northeast jumped out to a 15-2 lead and never looked back as they defeated Community 50-14.

Northeast led 33-6 at the half and 39-10 after three quarters.

The Lady Eagles had three in double figures led by Betty Edwards with 19 points. LeAnn Barnes had 12 and Lacy Pfeiffer contributed 10 points.

Callie Burgess (5) and Lori Coggins (4) rounded out the scoring for Northeast. Kathryn Smith led Community Christian with six points.

Northeast Academy will travel to Bethel Christian Academy on Tuesday.
