ROCKY MOUNT n Carol Carey Pittman, 69, died November 13, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at United Friendship Church of Christ by the Rev. Herman Vaughn. Interment will be Gardens of Gethsemane. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Joseph Pittman

ROCKY MOUNT n Joseph Pittman, 59, died November 10, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Thursday at the Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Anita L. Coley

ROCKY MOUNT n Anita L. Coley, 33, died November 12, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Light of Peace Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will be in Gardens of Gethsemane. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Marinetta Tabbicca

STATEN ISLAND, NY n Marinetta Tabbicca, died November 13, 2007 in Staten Island.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Peterson Chapel Baptist Church, Merry Hill. A wake will be held from 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Gilliam Funeral Home. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Geneva Lewter

AULANDER n Geneva D. Hardy Lewter, died November 11, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Lewter was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Zion Grove Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. James Mercer. Burial will be in the Lewter Family Cemetery, Kelford. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Rascoe Peter Lewter of Goldsboro; two brothers, Edward Hardy of Aulander and Joseph Hardy of Hempstead, NY; and three sisters, Edith Jenkins and Ruby Robinson, both of Bronx and Carlise Taylor of White Plains.

Elisa Smith

ROCKY MOUNT n Elisa Joy Smith, 5, died November 13, 2007 at Wake Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Leggett. Interment will be in Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Whitakers. A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

James W. Cannon

MULLINS, S.C. n Mr. James Walker Cannon, 79, died Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia after an illness.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, November 17 at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with Rev. D.B. Stokes officiating.

Mr. Cannon was born January 15, 1928 in Halifax County, N.C., a son of the late Erastus Walker Cannon and the late Rose Hill Cannon. He retired from the Mullins Hospital as a Medical Technologist. Mr. Cannon was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and a graduate of Dell School of Medical Technology in Asheville, N.C. He was a US Navy veteran, having served in World War II aboard the USS Underhill. Mr. Cannon was a member of VFW Post 6122, a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association and a member of the USS Underhill DE682 Memorial Group. He was a member of Primitive Baptist Church in Wilson, N.C.

Surviving Mr. Cannon are: 3 daughters, Carol Cannon of Colerain, N.C., Amy Sweeney of Cataula, Ga., and Lydia McKeel of Ahoskie, N.C.; and four grandchildren: Kelly Self, Taylor McKeel, Brandon Sweeney and Trevor McKeel.

Visitation was held Friday evening from 7 til 9 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Virginia D. Grant

WOODLAND – Virginia Dare Grant, 83, died November 13, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. Hunter’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Lloyd Bazemore Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Lloyd &uot;Bubba&uot; Bazemore Sr., 78, a native of Bertie County, died November 12, 2007, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Bazemore retired after more than 20 years from Foster-Grant as a machine operator. He was a former member of Woodville Plains Baptist Church, Lewiston, and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Bazemore; a daughter, Charlene Eaton of Pasadena, Md.; five sons, Lloyd L. Bazemore of Chesapeake, Roney Bazemore of Richmond, Va., Keith Bazemore of New Carrollton, Md., Reginald Bazemore of San Antonio, Texas, and Anthony Bazemore of Alexandria, Va.; three sisters, Eva Newsome, Ethel Moore and Naomi Stancil, all of Kelford; three brothers, Archie Bazemore, Ernest Bazemore and James Bazemore, all of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in New Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Milton R. Blount. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge.

Etolia S. Vale

SPARTANBURG, SC – Etolia Stribling Vale, 87, a native of Spartanburg, died November 14, 2007, at her home. She was the widow of the Rev. Charles Edward Vale.

Mrs. Vale taught at Chowan College, Murfreesboro, and Chadbourn High School and later taught at two large consolidated high schools, Wallace- Rose Hill in Duplin County and Northern High School in Durham County.

Survivors include one brother, Robert F. Stribling; daughter, Kathryn Vale Livermore; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 2-2:45 p.m. Saturday at Floyd’s North Church Street Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Wofford. Burial will be at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jonesboro United Methodist Church, 407 West Main Street, Sanford, NC 27332.

Gearline Keene

PATCHOGUE, NY n Gearline Edna Combo Keene, died November 12, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield, by the Rev. Charlie Carter Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Billie Keene and Michael Keene, both of Long Island and Tony Keene of Florence, S.C.; four daughters, Maria McLaurin and Linda Davis, both of Long Island; Jean Corbin of Jacksonville, Fla., and Brenda Wilridge of Youngsville, LA; five sisters, Lynette Boone, Clarice Copeland, Larraine Hall, Carolyn Cumbo and Gloria Smith; three brothers, William Combo, Robert Combo Jr., and James Combo; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

William Newsome Jr.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n William “Billy” Newsome Jr., a native of Hertford County, died November 15, 2007 at his home.

Newsome worked at Newport News Shipyard as a designer for 36 years.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Laura Howard; daughter, Shawnise of Richmond; sisters, Rita Brown and Barbara Kerns; and one brother, Joseph Bernard Newsome, all of Aulander.

Anne C. King

COLUMBIA, SC n Graveside services for Anne Curtis King, 84, widow of the late Hubert T. King of Columbia will be held 10 a.m. Saturday in Greenlawn Memorial Park Serenity Gardens with interment to follow. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements.

Mrs. King passed away on Thursday. She was born in Ahoskie, NC to the late Walter L. Curtis and Ruth Dowell Curtis. Mrs. King was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church.

Surviving are her nephews, Ritchie (Jean) Gillespie and William Curtis (Linda) Gillespie; and her caregivers, Susan and Elizabeth.
