ELON COLLEGE – Hertford County’s football season came to an end here last night (Friday), but not without a fight.

The Bears put up some lofty offensive numbers (349 total yards) against unbeaten and top-seeded Western Alamance, but HCHS had trouble finding the endzone and suffered a 37-10 setback in second round action of the NCHSAA Class 3-A state play-offs.

For head coach Diego Hasty and his young Bears, the season ends at 9-4 overall.

The Bears were within striking distance late in the first half, trailing 17-3 after Richard Burns capped a 75-yard HCHS drive by drilling a career-long 42-yard field goal.

However, Western Alamance bounced right back, mounting a 67-yard drive that took only five plays and 36 seconds to complete. Donald Britt’s 30-yard TD pass to Levon Curtis ended that drive as the hosts took a 24-3 halftime lead.

Western Alamance then put the game on ice by scoring on their first two possessions of the second half to take a commanding 37-3 lead. Touchdown runs by Kenneth Lindsey (5 yards) and Britt (24 yards) accounted for that pair of third-quarter scores.

The Bears lone touchdown of the night came midway the fourth quarter where quarterback Antonio Vaughan capped a 75-yard, eight-play drive with a 29-yard TD pass to Lamar Monger. Burns added the PAT.

It was a career night for Vaughan. The sophomore quarterback rushed 16 times for 105 yards and added 119 yards through the air on a 12-for-23 effort.

Western Alamance, who will host Bertie in next Friday’s Eastern Semifinals, scored on its first offensive snap as Britt and Curtis hooked-up on a 60-yard TD pass.

Chris Sparks then put the home team up by a 10-0 count with his 28-yard field goal later in the first quarter.

Britt’s 18-yard scoring run at the 8:03 mark of the second quarter staked Western Alamance to a 17-0 lead.
