MURFREESBORO – A day of moving in and getting settled was interrupted by a terrible incident here Saturday.

While Sheenina Rivers was attempting to move into a residence on Antler Drive in Deerfield Mobile Home Park, she told authorities she saw her ex-husband running towards the dwelling with a handgun. The incident took place around 5:40 p.m. Saturday.

Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan said in the wake of the incident, authorities are searching for Demond Burden, 26, of 41 Wilson Parkway in Portsmouth, Virginia.

According to the investigation conducted by Sgt. Jesse Fennell and Lt. Will Liverman, Rivers said she was moving into the residence with the assistance of Elton Pugh and Allen Maurice Washington while four children were in the home.

Burden allegedly opened fire, shooting five times before fleeing the scene.

According to the report, Rivers fell off the porch while Pugh and Washington attempted to get inside the residence. Pugh was struck twice, once in the back and once in the leg, by the hail of gunfire.

After the investigation, authorities are seeking Burden on seven counts of attempted murder and three counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Vaughan said Virginia authorities have been notified and the search for Burden is continuing. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts on Burden should contact Hertford County Sheriff’s Department at 358-7800.
