AULANDER – You might call it a sit-by shooting.

Whereas a drive-by shooting takes place when the shooter’s car is in motion, one that took place here Saturday morning involved two vehicles that were sitting still.

Melvin Louis Wilson, 27, of Ahoskie, was shot in the head Saturday morning near the intersection of NC 11 and NC 305.

Apparently, Wilson was driving his 1994 green Lincoln Town Car along NC 305 at approximately 8:30 a.m. when another vehicle pulled out in front of him sideways across the road and came to a halt, forcing Wilson to also stop in the middle of the highway.

The other vehicle, a GMC Denali, was occupied by Craig Eugene Gay and Brandon Lamont Harrison, both 20 years old and residents of Norfolk, Virginia.

According to Aulander Police Chief Mike Patterson, one of the occupants in the GMC opened fire on Wilson after his vehicle came to a stop.

&uot;It was a dispute over a female; they (Gay and Harrison) knew where he (Wilson) was coming from and pulled out and blocked the path so he could not continue on,&uot; Patterson explained.

The bullet hit Wilson’s head in what Patterson called a grazing wound. Wilson required medical treatment but did not have to be admitted to the hospital.

After Wilson was shot, the occupants of the GMC apparently fled the scene and picked up two more people, the female the incident allegedly occurred over and her fianc\u00E9.

A short time later, the vehicle was stopped by a posse of law enforcement officers near the infamous &uot;11 and 11&uot; intersection just outside of Ahoskie.

It is unknown at this time whether it was Gay or Harrison who was originally driving the vehicle, or which one was the shooter.

Both were charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a weapon into an occupied moving vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Each of their bonds was set at $600,000 cash and they are being held in the Bertie Martin Regional Jail.

&uot;I’d like to thank members of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, the Ahoskie Police Department, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Highway Patrol,&uot; stated Patterson.

He continued, &uot;Without their valuable assistance, the quick apprehension of the suspects would have been impossible.&uot;

Gay and Harrison’s first court appearance is set for today (Tuesday) at the Bertie County courthouse.
