WINDSOR – Several local groups received grants for health services at a check presentation ceremony October 22.

The event was held at Bertie Memorial Hospital and honored five non-profit organizations within the county.

A total of $68,100 was given through a University Health Systems (UHS) plan called the Community Benefits Grants Program.

Bertie Middle School was given $14,600 for quarterly health education events, including school-wide exercise and nutrition days.

The Bertie County YMCA was granted $6,000 to assist in its pediatric asthma program. That money will go to continue the organization’s yoga program for asthmatic children.

Greater Wynns Grove Community Development Center was awarded the largest share at $30,000. It will provide funds to continue the group’s community wellness program.

Albemarle Regional Health Services received $2,500 to provide expanded physical and nutritional education to Bertie County citizens and an additional $15,000 to increase access to services and education about breast cancer.

UHS awards money each year to non-profit organizations providing health education services.
