AHOSKIE – The brother of a late town councilman was elected to fulfill his term.

During Tuesday’s election, Maurice Vann, the brother of the late Larry “Cutt” Vann, was chosen by Ahoskie voters to fulfill that unexpired term.

Vann defeated C.R. Askew, who was appointed on an interim basis, by a vote of 107-61 to become one of the representatives of Ward B in Ahoskie.

Ahoskie Mayor Linda Blackburn received 268 votes in her bid for reelection. She was unopposed.

Also not facing opposition was Ward A Councilman Elaine Myers, who received 141 votes to retain her seat.

Two initiatives on the ballot received different fate from the voters.

Ahoskie’s General Obligation Wastewater Bond referendum passed after getting 71 percent approval from the voters. A total of 223 voted in favor of the measure with only 89 opposing.

The one-quarter cent county sales and use tax, however, was defeated by voters. Of the almost 1,600 who voted, 934 opposed the measure while 627 were in favor.

The incumbent Winton Mayor, Calvin Hall, handily won reelection, defeating challenger Orlanda Reed 43-15. There were also 10 write-in votes.

In the Winton council race, none of the five candidates were opposed. Incumbent Ernest Green finished first with 64 votes followed by McCoy Pierce with 60. Next on the ballot were incumbents Wesley Liverman (54) and Charles Jones (52). The fifth seat went to newcomer Will Liverman who received 48 votes.

There were no changes in Cofield where Mayor Hermea Pugh (44 votes) was unopposed as were council members Anthony Archer (50), Nettie Brickers (36) and Lee Watford (44). Newcomers Stephen Lassiter (42) and Darrell Partlow (44) were also unopposed.

In Como, incumbent Mayor Irvin Stephens got 17 votes to win reelection. He was unopposed. Also returning to office are all four council members who had no opposition. They were Susan Kennington (17), Stephen Pearce (17), Kevin Higbee (16) and Ann Spruill (16).

Harrellsville Mayor Robert Dantz was also unopposed and was reelected with 17 votes. Also returning to their seats are council members Coleman Taylor (18), Deborah Baker (16), Jo M. Liles (16), Mary Thompson (16) and Roy Worrells (16).
