WINDSOR – A Kelford man has waived his right to a probable cause hearing in a felony larceny of a motor vehicle case here Thursday.

Lemarquis Letron Smallwood was arrested Sunday in Windsor after being detained in Williamston by officers from the Williamston Police Department (WPD).

The owner of the stolen vehicle originally identified Smallwood, 21, of 402 South Main Street in Kelford, via a security videotape.

Detective Ed Pittman of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office received a report on October 18 from Larry Powell of Scotland Neck that his vehicle, a 1979 Buick, had been stolen from the Perdue parking lot in Lewiston.

&uot;After we identified Smallwood, we continued to search for the vehicle and last Sunday night I received a call that stated the vehicle was at an apartment complex in Williamston,&uot; Pittman said.

He continued, &uot;I contacted the WPD and they went to the vehicle. As they were sitting there, the suspect from the video camera (Smallwood) got into the vehicle.&uot;

At that point the WPD detained Smallwood. Pittman picked him up and arrested him for larceny of a motor vehicle.

&uot;I’d like to thank the WPD for assisting in this investigation. It’s always a great thing when law enforcement agencies can come together to solve a case,&uot; Pittman stated.

Smallwood was confined in the Bertie Martin Regional Jail under a $6,000 cash bond.

At his first court appearance Thursday, he waived his right to a probable cause hearing and the case was bound over to superior court for grand jury action.
