A. Odell Beals

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Alton Odell Beals, 63, a native of Elizabeth City, died October 29, 2007.

Beals was a truck driver for Southeastern Public Service Authority and a deacon at Brent-Lox Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Beals; a son, Timothy Beals of Pleasant Hill; daughters, Lisa Hill of Norfolk, Erin Crews of Guam and Nichole Emahiser of Chesapeake; his mother, Sublia Meekins Beals; a sister, Ada Glowaniak of Chesapeake; a brother, Harry Beals of Chincoteague; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m Thursday in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake.

John H. Joyner

COURTLAND, Va. n Rev. John Henry Joyner, died October 26, 2007.

At the time of his passing he was serving as an associate minister at Zion Southampton A.M.E. Zion Church in Courtland. Prior to his illness he was the pastor of The Risen Church of God in Boykins, Va. During his early years, residing in Portsmouth, he served as a long-standing minister of the gospel within the Church of God in Christ under Elder Abraham Smith and Elder Samuel Moore, presiding Bishops C.L. Mason and Levy Willis. After serving three years in the Army, serving more than 30 years as a cab driver for Safeway Cab Co. in Portsmouth and having retired after 20 years of federal government service from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he continued to work as a self-employed medical transporter for the Hampton Roads area until his illness.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Mae; one daughter, Mary Hampton; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and four great- great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Zion Southampton A.M.E. Zion Church in Courtland. Interment was in Zion Southampton A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Roundtree Family Mortuary, Murfreesboro, was in charge.

Doretha Rainey

JERSEY CITY, NJ n Doretha “Doe” Rainey, 64, formerly of Halifax, died October 27, 2007 at Greenville Hospital, NJ.

A visitation was held Tuesday at Parker Funeral Home, NJ. Also a visitation was held Wednesday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Twilight Baptist Church, Weldon, by the Rev. Danny B. Jones Sr. Interment will be in the Manley family cemetery.

Hattie Bonner

EDENTON – Hattie Bonner, 89, a native of Bertie County, died October 27, 2007 at

Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

She was a member of Province Baptist Church and a retired restaurant owner.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Riddick of Gatesville; and one granddaughter.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Province Baptist Church, Edenton, by Rev. John R. Shannon.

Burial will be at Vine Oak Cemetery Edenton.

Angeline V. Howell

EURE -Angeline Vann Howell, 71, a native of Northampton County, died October 29, 2007, in Down East Health & Rehab, Gatesville.

Mrs. Howell was retired after more than 26 years as a bus driver with the Gates County School System, she was a member of Eure Christian Church and the Gates County Rescue Squad.

Survivors include her husband, M. Leon Howell; her daughter, Debra H. Earley; both of Eure; her sister, Flora Sebeck of Wilmington; two brothers, Archie Vann of Conway and Roy Vann of Courtland, Va.; and a granddaughter.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial will be in the Howell family cemetery near the home. Floral arrangements will be accepted or contributions in her memory may be made to the Gates County Rescue Squad or the Eure Volunteer Fire Dept.

Harriet L. Roulhac

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Harriet Louise Roulhac, a native of Bertie County, died October 28, 2007.

She retired from the City of Norfolk. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk and a former member of The Area Council of Missionaries.

Survivors include a daughter, Ernestine R. Rountree of Portsmouth; a sister, Hazel Hunter of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. R.L. Davenport Sr. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.

Michael P. Brown

SMITHFIELD, Va. – Michael Prentice Brown, 70, died October 30, 2007, in a Suffolk hospital.

Brown retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church, Carrollton.

Survivors include two daughters, Michelle L. Brown of Corapeake and Terri B. Cumbia of Chesapeake; a sister, Dorothy Micheli of Las Vegas; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Faith Free Will Baptist Church by Pastor Barry Reel. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. SEVERN n Dewayne Joyner, 45, a native of Northampton County, died October 27, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Severn by the Rev. Elisha Barnes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton.

Survivors include his mother, Ethel Joyner of Severn; three daughters, Da’meshia Joyner, Kadliah Joyner and Tatayana Joyner, all of Conway; two sons, Duane Morris of Margarettsville and Tishawn Jones of Seaboard; one foster son, Quayshawn Rogers of Roanoke Rapids; nine sisters, Rosa Joyner, Katherine Joyner, Paula Joyner and JoAngelia Joyner, all of Severn, Sandra Joyner of Pendleton, Glenace Joyner and Minester Thomas, both of Milwaukee, Loistine Ponton of Margarettsville, and JoAnn Joyner-Loyd of Irving, Texas; two brothers, Lawrence Joyner of Mapleton and Stanley Joyner of Emporia, Va.; and two grandchildren.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Joseph Ausby Sr., died October 29, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mildred Wilder

NEWPORT NEWS, VA n Mildred Lee Taylor “Tee” Wilder, 73, a native of Bertie County, and formerly of Ahoskie, died October 30, 2007 at Sentara Care Plex, Hampton.

Mrs. Wilder was a member of Conoconary Baptist Church and retired sewing machine operator with Ahoskie Mfg. Co.

Survivors include a son, William “Boy” Henry Wilder of Newport News; daughters, Clementine Austin of Hampton and Rosa Holloman of Ahoskie; sisters, Isea Mae Cherry of Ahoskie and Sherbert Rankins of Raleigh; brothers, Ralph Taylor, David Taylor, Thurman Taylor and Linwood Taylor, all of Ahoskie and William Taylor of Stokes; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander by the Rev. Alton Edwards. Burial will be in Wilder’s Cemetery, Hexalena Rd., Ahoskie. A wake will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

William Dwight Rascoe

KELFORD n William Dwight “Dock” Rascoe, 79, died October 24, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Rascoe was a member of Star of Bethlehem Church, Ossining, NY and retired auditor with IBM.

Survivors include a son, Marc William Rascoe of Chappaqua, NY; a daughter, Alesis Rascoe of Mt. Kisco, NY; a sister, Arruth Artis of Ossining; and a brother, Zephaniah Rascoe of Ossining.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Star of Bethlehem Church, Ossining. Burial was in Dale Cemetery, Ossining. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, was in charge.

Anthony Jacobs

RICH SQUARE n Anthony Jacobs, 45, a native of Paterson, NJ, died October 27, 2007 at his residence.

Jacobs was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Rich Square and a farm worker.

Survivors include a daughter, Tywanda Walker of Rich Square; his mother, Florence Taylor of the home; stepfather, John Taylor of the home; sisters, Tonya Fleming of Mebane and Rosalynd Jackson of Paterson; and a brother, Zorrow Jacobs of Rich Square.

Walter W. Yates Jr.

WINTON n Walter William Yates Jr., 51, a native of Suffolk, Va., died October 30, 2007 at Va. Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Tommie Futrell. Burial will be in Howell Collins Cemetery, Suffolk. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Yates of Winton; his mother, Velma Yates of Toppings; a son, Trinard Bailey of Maryland; two daughters, Larosa Yates of Sumpter, SC, and Trina Bailey of Chesapeake; sisters, Isabell Morings of Suffolk and Vanessa Bonner of Windsor, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Jessie W. Sharpe

PENDLETON n Jessie Warren Sharpe, 96, a native of Northampton, died October 27, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Conway by the Rev. Mark Barfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include one godson, Wayne Day of Pendleton; one daughter, Lucille Warren of Aulander; one sister, Aretta Lane of New Jersey; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Russell Thompson

WINDSOR n Russell Warren Thompson, 80, a native of Wayne County, died October 29, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

Thompson was a truck driver.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Healing Temple, Lewiston, by Overseer Luther Cherry. Burial will be in the Outlaw family Cemetery, Windsor. A viewing will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cherry’s Funeral Home Chapel.

Bernetta Faison

ROCKY MOUNT n Bernetta Faison, died October 29, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.
