Eddie Young

MURFREESBORO n Eddie Young, 80, a native of Laurens, SC, died October 9, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Young was retired from the US Navy after 22 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, Murfreesboro. He was also retired as a welder from the Newport News Shipyard.

Survivors include his wife, Dora Hill Young of the home; a son, Arthur Young of Lambert, Calif.; a daughter, Judy Eley of California; a brother, John Young of Mattatan, MA; 15 grandchildren; and five great-great-children.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie.

Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Shylek M. Ruffin

RICH SQUARE n Shylek Montez Ruffin, infant, died October 13, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include his mother, Shelita Ruffin of Rich Square; a brother, Joshua Fisher of Rich Square; sisters, Jyani Ruffin and Elonie Ruffin, both of Rich Square; grandparents, Johnny Ruffin Sr. of Edenton and Elaine Ruffin of Rich Square; a brother, Joshua Fisher of Rich Square; great-grandmother, Emma Walton of Ahoskie; and great-great-grandmother, Emma Ruffin of Greensboro.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander, by the Rev. Fred Whitaker. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Nicky M. Demery

LEWISTON n Nicky McCoy Demery, 29, a native of Northampton County, died October 13, 2007 in Lewiston.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Bethlehem Church, Windsor, by Pastor Dennis Wooten. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include a daughter, Shaniqua Demery of Lewiston; his parents, William McCoy Demery and Barbara J. Pugh Demery of Lewiston; brothers, Clifton Earl Demery of California and Dexter Emmanuel Demery of Raleigh; a sister, Lashona M. Demery of Lewiston; grandmothers, Dorothy Demery of Aulander and Geraldine Pugh of Rich Square; and great-grandmother, Mozella Pugh of Jackson.

AULANDER n Shaton “Scooter” Williams, died October 14, 2007.

AULANDER n Mary Louise Williams “Mary Taylor” Vaughan, 37, died October 13, 2007.

Cyrus M. Johnson Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Cyrus M. Johnson Sr., 74, a native of Gates, died October 12, 2007.

Johnson was a retired mechanic for the city of Chesapeake. He was a member of Rose of Sharon United Holy Church in Suffolk.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie B. Johnson of Portsmouth; two daughters, Diane Trusty and Evelyn Campbell both of Portsmouth; and six sons, Lavane Johnson, Cyrus Johnson Jr., Norris Johnson, all of Portsmouth, Floyd W. Johnson of Chesapeake, Rickey Johnson

and Eric Johnson, both of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; three sisters, Sally Mary Sims, Hazel Lee Turner and Peggy Goulet; 17 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

A life celebration service will be conducted at noon graveside Tuesday in Carver Cemetery in Suffolk. The family will assemble at 1601 Spratley St., Portsmouth, at 10:45 a.m. Final care arrangements have been entrusted to J. T. Fisher Funeral Services. James H. Archer

MURFREESBORO n James Herod Archer, 94, a native of Hertford County, died October 6, 2007, at Roanoke- Chowan Hospital.

Archer was retired as a District of Columbia law enforcement officer.  He was a member of the D.C. Retired Law Enforcement Officers Association and South Winton Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughters, Norma Yvonne Archer Carter of Richmond, VA and Joyce Ann Archer Turpin of Silver Spring, MD; his sister, Christine Archer Luffborough of Norfolk, VA; a granddaughter, and four great grandchildren.

A memorial celebration of life service will be conducted on Mr. Archer’s birthday, December 1, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC.

Mary Gay

ROCKY MOUNT n Mary Gay, 92, died October 12, 2007 at her residence.

TYNER n William Joseph Overton, 68, died October 13, 2007 at Norfolk Sentara General Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

Norman Lassiter

AHOSKIE n Norman Lassiter, died October 13, 2007 at Down East Nursing Home, Gates.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Charlie Carter. Burial will be in the family cemetery, Cofield.

Lassiter was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Daniel Lassiter of Cofield; and three sisters, Hattie Combo of Petersburg, Va., Erma Ward of Ahoskie ad Wilma Askew of Winton.

Annie M. Pillmon

COLERAIN n Annie Mae Pillmon, died October 13, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Colerain First Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Mary Drake. Burial will be in the family cemetery, Colerain. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sisters, Mary Pillmon of Ahoskie, Helene Greene of Washington, D.C., and Cora Askew of Colerain.
