Shaton L. Williams

AULANDER n Shaton Latroy “Scooter” Williams, 31, died October 13, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Williams was a member of Greater Harvest Fellowship COGIC, male chorus, member of Bishop Security Force, graduate of Bertie High School class of 1994, apprentice school graduate at Newport News Shipbuilding Company and employed with Newport News Shipyard n Newport News, VA

Survivors include a daughter, Anyia Williams of Aulander; parents, Barbara Ann Williams Everett and Kenny Everett of Aulander; a sister, Kenya Parker of Washington; brothers, Kennie Everett Jr. of Fayetteville and Demetric Everett of Greenville, Ronald Everett of Aulander and Devell Harrell of Maryland; his grandmother, Sarah A. Williams of Aulander; and great-grandmother, Blanche Thompson of Lewiston.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Greater Harvest Church of God In Christ, Aulander, by Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard. Burial will be in Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander is in charge.

Mary Vaughan

AULANDER n Mary Louise “Mary Taylor: Williams Vaughan, 37, a native of Hertford County, died October 13, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mrs. Vaughan was a member of Mill Branch Baptist Church and a cashier with Duck Thru.

Survivors include her husband, Alvin Vaughan of Aulander; children, Lechelle Williams of Aulander, KaDarious Williams, Markell Williams and Rayont\u00E9 Wiggins, all of the home; her mother, Alma Louise Williams of Aulander; brother, George Taylor of Aulander; sisters, Wanda Montgomery of Aulander, Viola Brewer Harrell of Jacksonville, FL; Patricia Brewer of Newport News, Va., Ashley Wiggins of Aulander and Teffine Williams of Jacksonville; grandmothers, Moella Taylor of Aulander, Mary Mageline Williams of Lewiston; stepgrandmother, Marie Bishop of Ahoskie; and her godchildren, Donte Taylor and Monica Clark.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 pm. Friday at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by Bishop Anthony Cherry. Burial will be in Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Robert E. Dortch

AHOSKIE n Robert Earl Dortch, 69, of the 400 block of West First Street, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, in his home.

Mr. Dortch was born in Halifax County, a son of the late Hazel Earl Butler and Robert Benjamin Joyner Dortch.  He was a member of Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Mr. Dortch was retired from the U. S. Air Force with 23 years of service, was retired from Hechinger Company and was a retired corrections officer with Odom Correctional Facility.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Alice Harrell Dortch, a daughter, Valerie Dortch Gitt and husband, Mark of Burnsville, NC; two sons, Robbie Dortch and wife, Cindy of Randelman, NC, Danny Dortch and wife, Dee of Windsor, NC; sisters, Nancy Gitt of Burnsville, Cathryn Murden and Diane Smith, both of Chesapeake, VA; brothers, Cecil Dortch of Windsor, VA, and Harry Dortch of Smithfield, VA and eleven grandchildren.  He is also survived by an aunt, Betty Jean Britt of Chesapeake.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. David Bryan and the Rev. Lester Jarrett officiating.  Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck with Military Honors.  The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and will assemble at the church on Thursday, prior to services.  Memorial donations may be made to University Health Systems Hospice Care, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC, 27910.

Edna O. Bryant

CONWAY n Edna Odell Bryant, 83, died October 15, 2007 at her home in Conway.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Conway United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lindsey Green. A private family interment followed in the Burke family cemetery near Conway. Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, was in charge. It was Miss Bryant’s request that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Conway United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 326, Conway, NC 27820.

Miss Bryant was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church and a charter member of the XYZ Club.

Survivors include one nephew; and 13 cousins.

Ida S. Chappell

SUFFOLK, Va. n Ida Stump Chappell, 59, a native of Rocky Mount, VA, died October 11, 2007 at her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will be in Up River Cemetery in Whiteston community of Perquimans County. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Chappell was a registered nurse in the outpatient surgery department at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Sunbury.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald E. Chappell; a son, Jason Chappell of Greenville; a stepson, David K. Chappell of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters, Dorothy Largin and Tina Wade, both of Georgia, Geneva Robertson of Snow Creek, VA and Elizabeth Stump of Roanoke; three brothers, Billy Stump of Rocky Mount, Richard Stump of Callaway and Donald Stump of Roanoke; and

three stepgrandchildren.

Annie Holley

WINDSOR n Annie Holley, died October 13, 2007 at the Three Rivers Nursing Home, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Peterson Chapel Baptist Church, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

Shirley M. Bond

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. n Shirley M. Bond, died October 14, 2007 at Mercy Hospital, Philadelphia.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church, Windsor. A wake will be held Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home from 7-8 p.m.

Charlie Gibbons

MURFREESBORO n Charlie D. Gibbons, 71, a native of Hertford County, died October 13, 2007 at Albemarle Hosopital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. James Jordan. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Emma D. Gibbons of Murfreesboro; one son, Chester Gibbons of Murfreesboro; one daughter, Shirley Gibbons of Charlotte; one sister, Nettie Pope of Como; and three grandchildren.

William Overton

TYNER n William Joseph Overton, 68, a native of Cowan County, died October 13, 2007 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, by the Rev. William Norman. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Overton was a retired employee of Gates County Board of Education.

Survivors include his wife, Laura C. Overton; two daughters, Michelle Firtson of Bronx, NY, and Jodi Overton of Bridgeport, CT; one son, William E. Overton of Corapeake; and two grandchildren.

Queen E. Todd

LEWISTON n Queen Ester Todd, a native of Bertie County, died October 14, 2007 at Sentara Bayside Hospital, Virginia Beach, Va.

Mrs. Todd was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Sunday School Superintendent, Senior Choir Member, and member of Eastern Star, BA degree in Theology from Shaw University. She was a retired insurance agent with North Carolina Mutual Ins. Co. and a retired cosmetologist.

Survivors include a son, William Todd of Mitchellville, MD; daughters, Marian Todd Skinner of Lewiston, Debbie Todd Mitchell of Las Vegas, NV, and Katrina McDuffie of Stone Mountain, GA; brothers, Robert C. Lee of Lewiston, Jack Lee and Joe C. Lee, both of Portsmouth; sisters, Bernice Lee Perry of Raleigh, Katherine Cherry of Pleasantville, NJ, Flora Mae Mopp of Staten Island, NY, Shirley Joyner of Norfolk and Carlease Price of Danville; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. William L. Davis Jr. Burial will be in the Outlaw family cemetery, Lewiston. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Annie M. Pillmon

COLERAIN n Annie Mae Pillmon, died October 13, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Colerain First Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Mary Drake. Burial will be in the family cemetery, Colerain. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sisters, Mary Pillmon of Ahoskie, Helene Greene of Washington, D.C., and Cora Askew of Colerain; and one brother, Benjamin Pillmon of Washington, D.C.
