CURRITUCK – Meredith Davies Long has been inducted into a second Hall of Fame.

The Senior Woman Administrator and Sports Information Director at Chowan University was selected to be a part of the initial class of inductees into the Currituck High School Hall of Fame.

“Certainly to be associated with that caliber of student-athletes is an honor,” Long said. “The fact that it was the inaugural class was very special.”

Long, who played softball and basketball at Chowan before becoming the Head Softball Coach at the school, was enshrined into the Chowan Hall of Fame in 2006.

During her playing days with the Currituck Knights, Long participated in tennis, basketball and softball. She was named Female Athlete of the Year in both 1990 and 1992 at Currituck.

Long was part of the 1991 state champion softball team and her team won the eastern finals in both 1991 and 1992.

In basketball, her 1991 squad won the conference and regionals and made it to the eastern finals.

Long was named Player of the Year in both tennis and softball and was selected All-Conference in softball and basketball.

During her senior year, Long was recruited to what was then Chowan College to play basketball and softball.

She then spent four years on the softball team and two on the women’s basketball team.

Long said while she was honored with the selections to both halls of fame, her playing days were more about enjoyment than any honors.

“When you’re a teenager, your world consists of two or three things,” she said. “Sports was pretty much my life. My best high school memories are playing sports.”

Long was also appreciative of the coaches who helped her along the way.

“From recreation all the way to high school, I was really lucky to play for good coaches,” Long stated. “Some of the best coaches in the state of North Carolina are in Currituck.”

Long is married to Mark Long of Murfreesboro and the two have one daughter, Dakota, and are expecting another girl in January.
