MARGARETTSVILLE – A domestic incident here led to a near two-day standoff between a woman and law enforcement.

According to Northampton County Sheriff’s Captain and Lead Investigator Daryl Harmon, Roberta White, 49, of 1418 High Bridge Road in Margarettsville has been arrested after she barricaded herself and her 24-year-old daughter in their home.

Harmon said the incident began on Monday morning when the alarm clock when off and the White got up while her husband remained in bed.

When the alarm went off for a second time, White came back into the bedroom and allegedly lit the bed sheets on fire.

Harmon said the husband got up and was able to extinguish the flames.

The husband then walked into the living room where he found a trash can on fire.

“When he took the trash can outside to put the fire out she locked him out of the home,” said Harmon.

When deputies responded they found White had barricaded herself in the home along with her mentally handicapped daughter.

Harmon said the deputies at the scene attempted to negotiate with the woman, but to no avail. The law enforcement officers decided to clear the scene in an effort to get White to come out on her own.

Meanwhile, an arrest warrant was issued for White.

Northampton County law enforcement returned to the home on Tuesday at 12:30 a.m., this time with the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Special Response Team, which includes negotiators and a bomb unit.

The standoff continued until 9 p.m. that night when White was finally taken into custody.

“(The SBI) negotiated and talked her out of the residence,” said Harmon. “We were able to apprehend her without incident.”

Harmon said no injuries were reported.

White was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and taken to Northampton County Jail.

She has been placed under no bond. Her first court appearance is today (Thursday).

“I’d like to thank the SBI for their assistance on the case,” Harmon said.
