Linwood R. Butler Sr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Linwood R. Butler Sr., 59, a native of Chesapeake, died August 31, 2007, in his home.

Butler was employed as an assistant shop foreman with Gibson Equipment Co., Norfolk, for 32 years. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church (St. Julian Creek), Chesapeake, and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Elois F. Butler; daughter, Sherri L. Butler of Norfolk; son, Linwood R. Butler Jr. of Richmond, Va.; stepmother, Earlene Butler of Garysburg; sister, Janice Summerhill of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday by Dr. Frank Guns Sr. in New Hope Baptist Church (St. Julian Creek), Chesapeake. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will begin Tuesday at noon in Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham St., Portsmouth. The family will be at the residence. The body will be in church Wednesday at 10 a.m. www.fisherfuneral.com.

Mary Ann L. Fennell

WOODLAND – Mary Ann Long Fennell, 80, a native of Northampton County, died August 27, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Menola Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie Speller. Burial will be in the church cemetery.. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Long was a retired sewing machine operator. She was a member of Menola Baptist Church, where she served as president of the gospel choir, choir member for 36 years and Sunday School teacher. Also she was president of the missionary and director of the kitchen committee.

Survivors include three sons, Howard Fennell of Como, William Fennell of Poughkeepsie, NY and Ernest Fennell of Murfreesboro; one daughter, Mary Brown of Woodland; a sister, Bernice Warren of Long Branch, NJ; 34 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

W. Hunter Morgan Sr.

SUNBURY – William Hunter Morgan Sr., 77, a native of Gates County, died August 31, 2007, in Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake.

Morgan was a graduate of Sunbury High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against The Enemy. A member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church in Sunbury

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Beth Edwards Morgan; a daughter, Mary Chester Wasko of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sons, William Hunter &uot;Bill&uot; Morgan Jr. of Camden and George Edwards &uot;Ed&uot; Morgan Sr. of Sunbury; two sisters, Elizabeth Morgan Kneebone of State College, Pa., and Brownie Morgan Herbin of Murfreesboro; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Monday in Philadelphia United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tracy Clayton. Miller Funeral Home, was in charge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in his memory to the Gates County Historical Society, c/o Edith Seiling, Gates, NC 27937; the Duke Lung Cancer Research Program, c/o Dr. Jennifer Garst, DUMC 3198, 25178 Morris Bldg., Durham, NC 27710 for the benefit of Drs. Garst and D’Amico; the University of Pittsburgh Sally Miller Award, c/o Bev Knasko, Rheumatology, 3500 Terrace St., BST 7 South, Pittsburgh, PA 15261 for the benefit of the Miller Award for the Medically Underserved; or to a charity of one’s choice.

Clinton Williams Sr.

LEWISTON n Clinton Williams Sr., died August 31, 2007 at his residence.

Willie Perry Sr.

EDENTON n Willie Percy Perry Sr., 74, a native of Chowan County, died September 1, 2007 at Chowan Hospital.

Perry was a retired railroad worker with Northern Southern Railroad Company. He was a member of Ashland Baptist Church, Merry Hill.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ashland Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill by the Rev. W.J. Best. Burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include his sons, Willie Percy Perry Jr., Rodney Perry and David Bunch, all of Edenton, Alexander Freeman of Colerain and Elgin Perry of Norfolk, Va.; daughters, Roberta Perry of Newport News, Doris Cofield, Joyce Wilkins and Carolyn Spellman, all of Edenton, Alice M. Howard of Hertford, and Debra Perry and Bernice Jones, both of Norfolk; two brothers, Sam Perry of Edenton and John Perry of New York; sisters, Geraldine Perry of New York, Shirley Perry of Edenton, Doris Perry of Hampton and Ethel Harris of New York; 30 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Clarence Powell Jr.

EFLAND n Clarence Powell Jr., 71, died August 31, 2007 at Annie Penn Hospital, Reidsville.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Quankey Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids by the Rev. George L. Battle. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Interment will be in Susan P. Ivory Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.

ROCKY MOUNT n Matthew Thomas Parker, 20, died August 28, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Church of God of Deliverance. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, was in charge.
