MURFREESBORO – Murfreesboro Day is back again.

On Saturday, September 22 the 2nd annual Murfreesboro Day will be held in the town.

“There is something for all ages,” said Berna Stephens, chair of the Murfreesboro Economic Development Task Force, about the event.

Entries are being sought for the parade set for 10 a.m. to kick off the festivities. The free all-day event focuses on the downtown business community.

“We’ll have an information booth to give out business cards and flyers,” said Stephens.

Business owners are urged to enter floats, vehicles or walking units to highlight what they have to offer. Civic clubs and other organizations are encouraged to enter as well to spotlight their activities.

The day is planned to include music, dance and a martial arts demonstration. Vendors will be set up at The Commons on West Main Street with art, hand crafted items and baked goods as well as fresh produce. Space for vendors will be available for a nominal fee.

A Little Miss Murfreesboro and Little Mister Murfreesboro will be crowned during the day. The contestants are judged on talent. Stephens said this year more categories have been added including a Junior Miss and Mister Murfreesboro. A student art show is also scheduled.

Alice Eley Jones and Frank Stephenson will be on hand to autograph their books.

Entry forms for Little Miss and Little Mister Murfreesboro, vendors and parade floats are available at the Roberts-Vaughan Village Center located at Main and Wynn Streets.

Stephens said the inaugural Murfreesboro Day, initiated by the Murfreesboro Economic Development Task Force, was held last spring, but due to a conflict with Easter it was decided to move the event to fall.

Stephens said unlike the Watermelon Festival, Murfreesboro Day is a local celebration.

“It was a thought to bring the community, the Roanoke Chowan area, together,” said Stephens. “The Watermelon Festival is more of an event that draws people from all over. It’s the state celebration.”
