Marshall H. Parker

SUFFOLK, Va. – Marshall Howell Parker, 82, a native of Gates County, died August 26, 2007.

Parker retired from Planters Peanuts as a bookkeeper. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Senior Citizens Club of Liberty Springs Christian Church.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Charles Thompson. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Elizabeth A. Whitfield

WINDSOR – Elizabeth Ambrose Whitfield, 77, died August 27, 2007. She was the widow of Thomas E. Whitfield.

Mrs. Whitfield was a member of Eureka Baptist Church and was owner of Whitfield Mobile Home Park in Windsor, Va.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Riddick of Hobbsville; her son, Alan Harrell of Windsor; three brothers, Hubert Ambrose, James Wesley Ambrose and Gene Ambrose; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell & Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Harrington. Burial followed in Windsor Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach VA 23452.

Frank Liverman Jr.

ELIZABETH CITY n Frank W. Liverman Jr., 79, a native of Bertie County, died August 24, 2007 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. He was the widower of Esther White Liverman.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in the Liverman family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Liverman attended C.G. White School, Powellsville. He was a retired concrete contractor.

Survivors include two sons, William Liverman of Ahoskie and Willie Wynn of Chesapeake, Va.; five daughters, Gladys Overman of Ahoskie, Lorraine Flowers of Jacksonville, Fla., Jacqueline L. Hargrove of Kentucky and Terry Liverman of Norfolk; one brother, Herbert Liverman of Portsmouth; two sisters, Josephine Balance of Norfolk and Clara Hubert of Ahoskie; 20 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Barbara Dunlow

WINDSOR n Barbara Ann Burden Dunlow, 69, a native of Bertie County, died August 27, 2007 at her home.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Williamston Kingdom Hall. Memorial gifts may be made to University Hospital Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Dunlow was a member of Windsor Kingdom Hall and co-owner of Dunlow’s Carpet.

Survivors include her husband, Jake Dunlow of Windsor; a daughter, Susie D. White of Windsor; two sons, Jessie Mack Dunlow Jr. and Skip Dunlow, both of Windsor; a sister, Mary D. Brown of Windsor; a brother, Billy Brown of Windsor; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Evelyn E. Griffin

DURHAM n Evelyn E. Griffin, 82, a native of Bertie County, died August 24, 2007 at Durham VA Medical Center, Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel, by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Airman 2nd Class in the US Air Force, a graduate of W.S. Creecy School, Rich Square and retired from the military service.

Survivors include two sisters, Cleothia Watson if Staten Island, NY and Ann V. Costen of Boston, MA.

Harmony M. Taylor

COLERAIN n Harmony Mariah Taylor, one day old, infant daughter of Cherrelle Taylor of Colerain and George Holley, died August 27, 2007, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday at the Askew family cemetery, Hexalena Road, Ahoskie. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Other survivors include her grandparents, Debbie and James Leary of Colerain, George and Shirley Holley of Merry Hill and Willie and Gwen of Durham; great-grandparents, Mary and Robert “Bobby” Harrell of Harrellsville, Cecil White of Ahoskie, Willie Taylor Sr. of Powellsville, Margie Taylor of Powellsville, Kelly and Ola Saunders of Powellsville and Dora Perry of Powellsville; great-great-grandmother, Emma Taylor of Windsor.

Jessica L. Pope

CONWAY n Jessica Louise Pope, 23, died Sunday, August 26, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va. A native of Northampton County, she graduated from Northeast Academy in Lasker and received her Associate of Arts degree at Halifax Community College. She was employed as a Bookkeeper with Piggy Wiggly in Jackson.

A member of Galatia Baptist Church, Jessica enjoyed fellowship with her friends, horseback riding, and being out on the water boating or fishing, but, her dearest love was children. She carried for them as if they were her own and they called her “Ca-Ca.”

Survivors include her parents, Alton and Margaret Pope of their home near Conway; one brother, Gene and his wife, Angie of Conway; grandmother, Shirley Crowder of Jackson; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Thomas Crowder and by her paternal grandparents, John and Louise Pope.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 30, 2:00 p.m. at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster presiding. Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

Earlie Faulcon

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Earlie Faulcon, 90, died August 28, 2007 at his residence.

Norma Rose Bonney

Native of Hyde County, NC

ELIZABETH CITY

-Norma Rose Bonney, 77, of 1300 W. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, August 27, 2007, in the Outer Banks Hospital.

She was born in Hyde County, NC to the late Theodore and Bonnie Cuthrell Rose and the widow of the late Benjamin Ray Bonney, Sr.

Mrs. Bonney was a member of the City Road United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter # 44.

Mrs. Bonney is survived by a daughter, Sue B. Gregory and husband, Don of Gates, NC, two sons, Benjamin Ray Bonney, Jr. and wife, Wanda of Southern Shores and Roger Wayne Bonney and wife, Barbara of Raleigh; three sisters, Joanna White of Elizabeth City, NC, Marian Heilman of Petersburg, VA and Paula Attix of Lynchburg, VA.; two brothers, Ted Rose of Hampton, VA and Jerry Edward Rose of Raleigh, NC.

Also, she is survived by five grandchildren, Melinda G. Byrum, Don Gregory, Jr.,

Dennis Gregory, Jennifer Bonney and Katrina Stone and five great grandchildren, Victoria, Catherine, D. J., Dillon, and Aaron. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter Maegan Gregory.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 30, 2007, at 11:00am in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church St., by Rev. Scott Sukeforth.

Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends and relatives at her residence, 1300 W. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC.

Steven R. Cannell Jr. 

HARRELLSVILLE – Steven Ross Cannell Jr., age 2 years, August 24, 2007.

Master Cannell was born in Polk County, Fla., to Steven Ross Cannell, Sr. and Sarah Holloman Cannell. 

He enjoyed Vacation Bible School at Christian Harbor Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Leonard &uot;Jupe&uot; and Barbara Holloman of Harrellsville and his paternal grandmother, Deborah Sue Ball of Anderson, Indianna.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Christian Harbor Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Hugh Mizelle. Burial will be in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday and other times at the home.

Makenzie H. Clark

AULANDER — Baby girl Makenzie Hazae Clark, two month old daughter of Tameka C. Mebane of Aulander and Terrence G. Roscoe of Gatesville, died August 25, 2007 at Kings Daughters.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Alma O. Lucas. Burial will be in Wilders-Cherry’s Family Cemetery, Aulander.

She is survived by a brother, Hajee T. Mebane of Aulander.

Franklin Flanagan

AHOSKIE – Franklin “Frank” Flanagan 72, of the 100 block of Albemarle Drive died Tuesday August 28, at Roanoke Chowan, Hospital.

He was a native of Halifax County, NC. the son of the late Albert Benjamin Flanagan, Sr. and Ethel Brown Flanagan. He was a retired warehouse manager for Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, a member and deacon of Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church, and a army veteran. He was predeceased by his first wife Sadie Ray Flanagan, three brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Lila Carawan Flanagan, two daughters; Regina Harrison and husband Henry, Colerain, NC. Rhonda Terry and husband Kenneth, Murfreesboro, NC., one sister; Rebecca Flanagan Brown and husband Lonnie, Colerain, NC one brother; Albert Benjamin Flanagan, Jr. and wife Ruth Ann, Murfreesboro, NC. two stepdaughters; Sherrie Barnes, Kitty Hawk, NC, Kathy Carawan, Raleigh, NC and eight grandchildren.

A celebration service of Mr. Flanagan’s life will be held 3:00 P.M. Friday August 31, 2007 at Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Tipton officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.

AHOSKIE n Kenneth Brown, 59, a native of Hertford County, died August 28, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Ashe. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his daughter, Kesha Hopkins; his mother, Elaine Brown; a sister, Connie Mitchell, all of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.

Jarvis R. Miller

SAN ANTONIO, Texas n Jarvis Robert “Bobby” Miller, 79, a native of Norfolk, Va., died June 28, 2007 in San Antonio.

Miller was retired from the Vinton, Louisiana Police Department.

Survivors include his wife, Dot Miller of San Antonio; sons, Robin and Ricky Miller of Texas; Robert Carl Miller of Georgia; daughter, Jennifer Coffey of Georgia; a brother, Bruce Miller of Columbia, SC; sister, Betty Roberson of Williamston; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 9 a.m. on Saturday, at Ahoskie Cemetery, Ahoskie. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge of local arrangements.

Sarah K. Swain

AHOSKIE n Sarah King Swain, 89, a native of Greene County, died August 29, 2007, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mrs. Swain was a member of Powellsville Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters, Janice S. Hughes of Merry Hill and Nancy S. Banks of Ahoskie; sons, Roy Swain of Ahoskie and L.B. Swain of Windsor; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert May and the Rev. Raleigh Johnson. Burial will be in Ahoskie Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday and other times at the home of her son, Roy Swain, Brinkleyville Road, Ahoskie.
