Helen J. Brown

COLERAIN n Helen Jernigan Brown, 91, of the 700 block of Elm Grove Road, died Wednesday, August 22, 2007, in her home.

Mrs. Brown was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late David Henry and Mary Jernigan.

She was a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church and had retired as a seamstress for Kelwood. She was also a farmer with her late husband, Robert Edward Brown, and a homemaker.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Marvin D. Brown of Colerain; two granddaughters, Wanda B. Mizelle and Lisa B. Roughton, both of Colerain; and a great grandson, Christopher Ryan Mizelle.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2007, at Elm Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Preston Jernigan officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Hurley Foulk

GATES – Hurley Foulk, 78, a native of Nansemond County, Va., died August 13, 2007 at his residence.

Foulk was retired carpenter. He was a member of Corinth Chapel Church in Suffolk Va. where he was a trustee and a member of the men’s choir.

Survivors his wife Beatrice B. Foulk of the home; two sons, Hurley A. Foulk of Virginia Beach and John Foulk of Laurel, Md.; two daughters, Janice Foulk of Gates and Myrtle Rodgers of Franklin; one brother, Calvin Foulk of Franklin; and six grandchildren.

Services were held on Aug. 18, 2007 at Corinth Chapel Church, Suffolk.

Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.

Martha Staley

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Martha Jane Staley, 68, died August 21, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Simmons Grove Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. Melvin Davis. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

William E. Hill

COMO – William E. Hill, 88, a native of Southampton County, Va., died August 21, 2007 at his residence.

Hill was a retired truck driver and he also work part-time for the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department.

He was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como, where he was a deacon and a former trustee. He was also a Mason.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Erma B. Hill of Como; two daughters, Minister Ernestine Hill of Como and Majorie Vaughan of Raleigh; and one grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Como. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro,is in charge.

Lee R. Farmer Sr.

AULANDER n Lee Roy Farmer Sr., 83, a native of Bertie County, died August 22, 2007 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church by the Rev. Steven Evans. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ebenezer Assembly of God Church.

Farmer was a WWII United States Army Veteran. He was a member of Ebenezer Assembly of God Church and a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Farmer; his children, Bobby Farmer of Edenton, Willie Louis Farmer of Francis Mill and Lee Roy Farmer Jr. of Kelford; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Demetrius Jones

ROCKY MOUNT n Demetrius Jones, 34, died August 22, 2007 at VCU Medical Center, Richmond, Va.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Arlean Johnson

LITTLETON n Arlean Mearl T. Johnson, 59, died August 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Willie Ward. Interment will be in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Littleton.

Mattie M. Carr

LEXINGTON, KY n Mattie Mae Carr, 68, died August 17, 2007.

Minnie Davis

ROCKY MOUNT n Minnie Lee Westry Davis, 97, died August 21, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Halifax Rd., Rocky Mount. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Nashville. Herbert K. Hill

WASHINGTON, D.C. n Herbert Keith Hill, 56, a native of Bertie County, died August 18, 2007 at this residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Kelford. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Kelford. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Hill was a member of First Baptist Church of Kelford. He served in the US Air Force and graduated from Bertie High School. He was also self-employed as a flooring installer.

Survivors include his mother, Marie Kea Hill of Newport News, Va.; a daughter, Felica Veale Buckson of Maryland; sons, Reginold Lipscomb and Lloyd Lipscomb, both of Washington; brothers, Clarence Hill Jr. of Queens, NY, Thomas Hill of Kansas City, MO, Charles Hill of Washington, and Jeffery Hill of Roxobel; sisters, Linda Hill Ponton of Newport News, Lora Griffin of Queens and Deborah Burden of South Hill, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Melvin Chamblee

AHOSKIE n Melvin Chamblee, 68, a native of Hertford County, died August 22, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Moore. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Chamblee was a member of Grater Wynns Grove Baptist Church, Colerain and graduated from R.L. Vann High School. He was a retired pipefitter from Newport News Shipyard after 28 years.

Survivors include his wife, Doris E. Chamblee of the home; sons, Felix Chamblee of Ahoskie, Alvin Chamblee of Winston-Salem and Willie Lee Sessoms of Baltimore, Md.; daughters, Odessa Chamblee of Greenville, Theresa Roberson of Boston, Mass.; and Helen Bellemy of Virginia Beach, Va.; his mother, Gladys Chamblee of Ahoskie; brothers, James Chamblee, Clarence Chamblee, and William Chamblee, all of Ahoskie; a sister, Clara Howard of Aulander; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Emma Mitchell

NEWARK, NJ n Emma Shoulars Mitchell, 92, a native of Rich Square, died August 20, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. Clarence Myrick. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church and a member of St. Paul Tabernacle Holiness Church trustee, usher and mother of the church. She was retired from G.E Electric Company in Newark.

Survivors include a son, John Shoulars Jr. of Newark; a daughter, Georgianna Shoulars of Newark.

Johnny L. Fowler

FRANKLIN, Va. – Johnny Lawrence Fowler, 58, a native of Southampton County, died August 22, 2007.

Fowler was an automotive technician with Drake Tire Company for more than 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Marshall Fowler; three daughters, Jennifer Keech, Jessica Fowler and April Eure, all of Franklin; four sisters, Faye Vinson, Sarah Long, both of Franklin, Mary Elizabeth Marshall of Gates, and Martha Ann Lander of Richmond; two brothers, Henry Fowler and Lawson &uot;Dicky&uot; Fowler, both of Franklin; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Black Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Greg Kitts. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park. Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

Lena Ellen P. Eure

HARRELLSVILLE –

Lena Ellen Piland Eure, 75, of the 200 Block of Pawnee Road,

known to family and friends as “Na Na”, peacefully succumbed Thursday, August 23, 2007, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital with her immediate family and the loving, caring nurses and physicians of the intensive care unit by her side. She was the widow of Dewey Carter Eure.

A native of Hertford County, she was a homemaker known for her spirited nature, making anyone in her company smile with her positive outlook, wit, and love of God, life, family, and friends.

So dear to her family, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

She was the “baby” of eleven children born to the late William Stephen and Cora Lena Eure Piland.

She was a member of Harrellsville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her only daughter, Shelia Eure Stallings and her husband, Ronnie of the home;

three grandchildren, Nicole Stallings Eure and husband, Raymond, Dewey Stallings and wife, Jennifer, all of Harrellsville, and Stacy Stallings Rooker and husband, Jon of Sanford, NC; three great grandchildren, Carter Stallings Eure, Lindsey Nicole Stallings, and Owen Dewey Stallings.

Her only surviving sibling is a very dear and loving sister, Annie Piland Mathias and husband, Thomas of Winton.

Lena Ellen leaves a family and a host of dear friends to cherish the wonderful years they shared together, remembering her love for them as they too loved her so deeply and the dignity she possessed as she bravely lived with Muscular Dystrophy.

Her heart was always filled with admiration, love, and trust for dear friend and physician, Charles J. Sawyer, MD, whom she and her family cherished deeply for the years of medical care, compassion, and encouragement he gave her.

A graveside celebration of life service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2007, at the Harrellsville Cemetery with the Rev. Hugh Mizelle and the Rev. Gilbert Crawford officiating. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and also at the home following the service.

Garrett Funeral Home is serving the Eure family.

Eva Brickhouse

COLUMBIA n Eva Everton Brickhouse, 97, a native of Tyrrell County, died August 21, 2007 at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, Va. She was the widow of Charlie Preston Brickhouse.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Royce Reynolds. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell, is in charge.

Mrs. Brickhouse was a homemaker and a member of Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Muriel Jean Kight of Ahoskie; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
