Annabelle M. Calcaterra

NORFOLK, Va. – Annabelle M. Calcaterra, 95, a native of Gates County, died August 11, 2007, in the Ballentine Home in Norfolk.

Mrs. Calcaterra worked for the U.S. government at the Naval Supply Center in Norfolk and retired after 35 years of service. She was an active member of Glenwood Park Presbyterian Church for 50 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Gloria L. Beale of Hampstead; two granddaughters, Deborah Land of Chesapeake and Roberta Thaxton of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; two grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Monday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Robert W. Tull. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, was in charge. Olia E. Harrell

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Olia Elizabeth Harrell, 67, a native of Gatesville, died August 7, 2007, in her home.

Mrs. Harrell was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norfolk, was Past Matron of Berkley Chapter No. 52 and Grand Representative of Wyoming in Virginia, Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley M. Harrell Sr.; two sons, Stanley M. Harrell Jr. of Alexandria, Va., and Keith M. Harrell of Louisville, Ky.; two grandchildren; and her brother, James M. Harrell of Eure.

A funeral was conducted Monday in First Baptist Church of Norfolk by the Rev. Dick Baker. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in Eure. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Norfolk and the Berkley Chapter No. 52 Order of the Eastern Star. Mary Thompson

HARRELLSVILLE n Mary Frances Thompson, died August 10, 2007 at her residence.

She was the widow of Lester Thompson.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist by the Rev. Robert Ashe. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Thompson was a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Harrellsville.

Survivors include four daughters, Annie Mae Holley of Elliott City, Md., Bessie Byrd of Powellsville, Mary Elizabeth Porter of Harrellsville and Flossie Smallwood of Windsor; two sons, John Thompson of Harrellsville and Robert Thompson of Winton; one sister, Mariah Parker of Colerain; one brother, George Stewart of Philadelphia, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

RICH SQUARE n Willie Henry Thompson, died August 11, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel, by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Thompson was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Vernicka Irving of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Florence Deans of Woodland.

Melvin Gilliam

WINDSOR n Melvin “Hamburger” Gilliam, 76, died August 10, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Refreshing Center Church of God in Christ. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.
