Clarence Rogers

MURFREESBORO n Clarence Rogers, 67, a native of Pendleton, died August 14, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by Pastor Dorothy Ruffin. Burial will be in Carvers Park Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, MacDaniel Rogers Jr. of Heidelberg, Germany and Derrick A. Rogers of Maryland; two daughters, Patricia Ann Rogers of Lewiston and Clara Mae Rogers of Charlotte; stepchildren, Janice Majette of Raleigh, Ella Artis of Kelford, Brenda Richards of California and McKinley Majette of Edenton; two sisters, Minister Darlene Branch of Norfolk, Va., and Marie Rogers of Norfolk; three brothers, Willie Rogers of Pendleton, John Rogers of Norfolk and Minister Calvin Rogers of Norfolk; and two grandchildren.

Hattie Mosley

LEWISTON n Hattie Mosley, died August 14, 2007 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

She was a member at St. Luke Healing Temple in Lewiston.

Survivors include six sons, Andrew, George and James Mosley, all of Windsor, Thedious Mosley of Brooklyn NY, Thomas Mosley of Florida, and Raymond Mosley of Aulander; two daughters, Mozella M. Green of Suffolk, Va. and Alice Mosley Bonds of Windsor; 20 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at St. Luke Healing Temple in Lewiston by Bishop Early Gay Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Cecil Jones

GASTON n Cecil Tommie “Bird” Jones, 46, died August 14, 207 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mary P. Bell

WINDSOR n Mary P. Bell, 83, died August 13, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Refreshing Center of God in Christ, Windsor. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Amanda Phelps Overby

BRANCHVILLE, Va. – Amanda Miller Phelps-Overby, 78, a native of Bertie County, died August 15, 2007. She was the widow of Herman W. (Kyser) Overby.

Mrs. Overby was predeceased by her first husband, Franklin Wilton Phelps. She was a retired supervisor from Narrow Fabrics in Boykins, a member of the Branchville Volunteer Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Branchville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Kayre Ann Harrup and Nancy P. Barrett, both of Branchville; one son, Franklin Wilton Phelps Jr. of New Brunswick, Canada; two brothers, Roger Wesley &uot;Dick&uot; Miller of Ahoskie and Bobby Ray Miller of Plymouth; three granddaughters; three great-grandsons.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. Michael Baugham and the Rev. Ricky Freeman. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery. Adelaide Lassiter

AHOSKIE n Adelaide Lassiter, died August 16, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by Elder Tracy Peele. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mary V. Freeman

AHOSKIE – Mary Virginia Freeman, 80, died on August 15, 2007 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Colerain by Rev. William McKinley Freeman. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday. Walson Funeral Home of Elizabeth City is in charge.

Survivors include one sister, Lillian Cherry of Colerain.

Kenneth Lee Cosgriff

Kenneth Lee Cosgriff, 73, of the 100 Block of Union Rd., passed away peacefully on Friday, August 17, 2007 at his home in Ahoskie, NC surrounded by his family and friends, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ken was the son of Edward Leo and Gladys Beatrice (Baily) Cosgriff. He was born on August 31, 1933 in Britt, Iowa where he graduated from Britt High School. He received a BS in Forestry from Iowa State University in June, 1956. Ken was a Veteran of the US Army and the Army Reserve.

Ken lived most of his adult life in Portsmouth, Va., where he retired from Atlantic Wood Industries. He moved to Ahoskie in 1998 and married his wife, Carolyn Martin on August 5, 2001. Ken opened a flower and specialty shop called Union Station/Ken’s Corner in Ahoskie, NC which he ran until August, 2006.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Martin Cosgriff and four children, Debra Cosgriff Dahmer of Midlothian, Va., Lissa Cosgriff Mann and husband, Richard of Richmond, Va., Kymberly Cosgriff Osterbind and husband, Daniel of Midlothian, Va., and Michael Allen Cosgriff and wife Shirley of Valdosta, Georgia. He is survived by three grandsons, James Dahmer of Richmond, Va., and Timothy and Matthew Osterbind of Midlothian, Va., his sister, Catherine Devine and her husband, James of Corwith, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. He was stepfather to six children and step-grandfather to ten grandchildren.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Paul Cosgriff, his sister, Carol Rasmuson and the mother of his children, Margaret Cook Cosgriff.

Ken was a member of Union Baptist Church and sang in the choir. He loved to sing and play the piano. Ken could always be heard whistling and this will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Ken was an avid gardener and loved flowers, plants and trees. He leaves behind many beautiful gardens for us to remember him by. Ken loved spending time with his wife and family. He enjoyed time spent golfing and fishing with his son, sons-in-law and grandson.

The family will receive friends and family in the home.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 on Monday, August 20 at Union Baptist Church, Ahoskie, NC. Interment will follow at Hoggard Memorial Cemetery in Lewiston, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to UHS, Hospice Care at P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910 (in memory of Ken Cosgriff) and to the Union Baptist Church Building Fund at Box 431, Boone Farm Rd., Ahoskie, NC 27910.
