Return to yesteryear

AHOSKIE – It’s a time to renew old acquaintances and reminisce about the good old days in school.

That time is nearly here as the R.L. Vann Community Resource Center, Inc. will host its seventh biennial R.L. Vann School reunion on Aug. 31-Sept. 3.

All R.L. Vann alumni are invited to attend the various functions planned for the reunion. Additionally, reunion officials cordially invite the general public to take part in the festivities.

Alumni taking part in the festivities are reminded to bring their R.L. Vann Trojan paraphernalia (caps, t-shirts, etc.).

Additional details can be gained by calling 252-209-8442.

One of the featured events is a reunion luncheon, set for 2 p.m. at Roanoke-Chowan Community College. There, former Trojan athletes, majorettes and band members will be recognized.

The luncheon’s guest speaker is nationally renowned motivational speaker Herman Boone. A native of Rocky Mount, Boone is perhaps best known as the head football coach at T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The role he played to unite that school during the turmoil surrounding integration in the early 70’s inspired the film, “Remember the Titans.” Boone’s role in that smash hit movie was portrayed by Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington.

Some of the old-time football fans in the local area may also remember Boone as the head coach at E.J. Hayes High School in Williamston. There, from 1961-69, his teams complied an impressive 99-8 record. His 1966 football team was recognized by Scholastic Coach’s Magazine as “The Number One Football Team in America.”
