WINTON – A Maryland man on the lam for more than two months is in the Hertford County Jail.

Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan announced Monday morning that Justin David Pope, 30, of Downs Avenue in Elk Ridge, Maryland is behind bars facing eight felony charges in connection with a March 27 incident.

“We are very happy to have him off the street,” Vaughan said. “I appreciate the assistance of the Maryland authorities in getting him off the streets.”

In March, Pope allegedly entered a residence on N.C. 561 and pushed down the woman living at the home before tying her to a recliner. Pope then allegedly went through the victim’s residence and took four rings, necklaces, money, a credit car, cell phone and the keys to her Chevrolet Impala which he used to flee the scene.

Pope was stopped in Halifax County later that same day and issued a citation for speeding, but was released because Hertford County officials had not identified him as the suspect at that time.

He was later picked up by the Baltimore Police Department for charges he was facing in Maryland.

“When they arrested him, it came up on the computer that we were looking for him in Hertford County,” Vaughan said. “After they finished with him, we were able to go pick him up.”

Upon his return to North Carolina, Pope was charged with eight felony counts relating to the incident and one misdemeanor. The felonies included breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, first degree kidnapping, common law robbery and financial card theft. He was also charged with assault on a female.

Pope is under a $64,000 secured bond.
