Helen Hinton

FRANKLIN, Va. n Helen Hinton, died July 30, 2007 at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.

Mrs. Hinton was a member of Mt. Calvary, Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie.

She is survived by a sister, Julia Romas of Bronx, NY.

Retha F. Carter

COMO n Retha Flanagan Carter, 76, of the 200 block of Spiers Road, died Thursday, August 2, 2007 in her home.

Mrs. Carter was born in Halifax County, a daughter of the late Albert Benjamin and Ethel Brown Flanagan.

She was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church and a retired cosmetology instructor.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Leighton V. Carter; a sister, Rebecca Flanagan Brown and husband, Lonnie of Colerain; two brothers, Frank Flanagan and wife, Lila of Ahoskie and Albert Benjamin Flanagan, Jr. and wife, Ruth Anne of Murfreesboro; a step on, Donald Carter and wife, Patricia of Greenville, NC; two grandchildren, Denise Martin and husband, Joe, and Shelly Burton and husband, John, all of Maryland; and four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Carter was predeceased by her sons, Dennis and Sammy Carter.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2007 at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. J. Brabban officiating.

Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Scotland Neck, NC.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and other times at the home.

Lane Evans

FRANKLIN, Va. n Lane “Bronco” Evans, 71, a native of Virginia, died July 29, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Community Church of Deliverance, Capron. Burial will be in Bryant’s Baptist Church Cemetery. Rountree Family Mortuary & Cremation Service, Greenville, is in charge.

Evans retired from International Paper, formerly Union Camp.

Arthur H. Woody

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Arthur Hicks Woody, 89, a native of Durham, died August 1, 2007.

Born in Durham, N.C., he was the son of Arthur Hazel and Esther Shepherd Woody.

Woody retired from the Seaboard Railroad after 44 years of service as an engineer. He

was active at Western Branch Baptist Church and taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served as deacon. More recently, he was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Ewell Woody; two daughters, Kimberly Swaney of Virginia Beach and Kathy Joyce of Kannapolis; and a son, Richard Hicks Woody of Corapeake; a sister, Kathleen Nash of Raleigh; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pinecrest Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery where Masonic rites will be accorded. Loving Funeral Home is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, 386 Park Ave. South, New York, NY 10016-8804.

George W. Cherry

WINDSOR n George Wood Cherry, died August 1, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. William L. Davis Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Roger Price of Baltimore, Md.; one daughter, Thelma Cherry Hardy of Portsmouth, Va.; four brothers, William Cherry of Richmond, Va., Linwood Cherry of Greenville, Forrest Cherry of Richmond and John F. Cherry of Baltimore; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
