Carlton E. Asbell

TYNER – Carlton Emerson Asbell, 80, a native of Chowan County, died July 15, 2007, in Three Rivers Nursing Center, Windsor. He was the widower of Blanche Mansfield Asbell.

Asbell was a retired farmer. He also later retired from the Chowan County Water Dept. A lifelong member of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church, he was a charter member of the Center Hill-Crossroads Volunteer Fire Dept., where he served as the assistant fire chief from 1965 to 1977 and was recently a member of its board of directors. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Edward G. Bond Post 40 of the American Legion, where he was awarded life membership in 1995. Other community involvement included two terms on the Chowan County ABC board of directors.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn A. Owens of Edenton and Amy Asbell of Tyner; and four grandsons.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church by the Revs. Ron Parr and Lamar Sentell. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church or the Center Hill-Crossroads Volunteer Fire Dept.

Jean J. Pruden

GLOUCESTER, Va. – Jean J. Pruden, 63, a native of Windsor, died July 15, 2007, in her home.

. She graduated high school in Plymouth, N.C. Jean met her husband to be, Richard Pruden in 1963, married in 1964 and relocated to Newport News. The last 30 years of her life was spent in Gloucester County, Virginia. Jean was a collector and an avid craftsperson, having won top prize at the county fair for needle work and stained glass many times. After a short working career, she was a stay at home wife and mother. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Donald Ray Joyner.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Pruden; daughter, Tracey Moore; and a grandson.

The family received friends Wednesday in Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point by the Rev. Dr. Richard Croxton. Interment was private. Gessina H. Lee

WINDSOR n Gessina H. “Little Sis” Lee, 88, a native of Bertie County, died July 13, 2007. She was the widow of Nathan Lee.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. James Collins. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Lee was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Nicholas Lee of Dorchester, Mass., and Nathan Lee of Mays Landing, NJ; four daughters, Mattie Williams of Pleasantville, Esther Heckstall of Merry Hill, Eleanor Derry of Galloway and Shirley Young of Pomona; one godson, Leon White of Raleigh; two goddaughters, Diane Veale-Greene of Fayetteville and Ann Peele of Lewiston; one sister, Winnie Watson of Baltimore, Md.; 14 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Edward Pugh

NEW YORK, NY n Edward “ED” Pugh, 78, died July 9, 2007 at Saint Luke Hospital, Manhattan.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, 706 Ghent Street. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Bruce Myane

SUFFOLK, Va. n Bruce Wayne Myane, 58, a native of Suffolk, died July 14, 2007.

Myane was retired after 32 years as a service technician with Verizon. He was a lifetime member of the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, Past President and member of the Suffolk Ruritan Club. He was the 2005 Chairman of the Peanut Fest and member of the Suffolk Peanut Festival Executive Committee, member of the Zuni, Somerton, and Gates Hunt Clubs and the National Wildlife Turkey Federation.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Baker Mayne of Suffolk; daughter, Kristy M. Daniels of Suffolk; his mother, Inez Babb Myane of Suffolk; brother, Roy Myane; and a grandson.

Marilyn H. Vick

Courtland n Marilyn Hall Vick, 73, passed away July 17, 2007. She was born in Sampson County, NC, a daughter of the late James Howard Hall, Sr. and Emma Jones Hall Kenney.  Mrs. Vick was a retired eligibility specialist with Halifax County Social Services and was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and the Harrellsville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of eighteen years, Clifton Leon Vick; three sons, Dennis McCoy Powell and wife, Dee, David Charles Powell and wife, Cheryl, all of Powellsville, NC and C. Greg Vick and wife, Sandra, of Courtland; a sister, Carolyn Hall Hockaday and husband, Wade S., of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a brother, James Howard Hall, Jr. of Ahoskie, NC; four grandchildren, Wayne Powell and wife, Shannon, Brandon Powell, Heather Powell and Andrew Vick; a great grandchild, Kole Kent Powell;  several nieces and nephews and her special dog, “Sam I Am”.   She was predeceased by a brother, Charles M. Hall.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Courtland Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Speight and the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery with the Courtland and Powellsville Volunteer Fire Departments serving as honorary pallbearers. Lucille E. Jackson

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Lucille E. Jackson, a native of Jackson, died July 15, 2007, in Sentara CarePlex, Hampton. She was the widow of Walter P. Jackson.

She was born in Jackson, N.C., March 6, 1923. She was the daughter of Pinkie Williams and reared by June and Mamie Edmond.

She later joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church. She received her education at Coats High School in Seaboard. She was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and was a member of the DAV. She retired from the City of Portsmouth.

Survivors include three sisters.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. William S. Hampton. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge. The body will be taken to the church at 9 a.m. Thursday. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Thursday for the procession to the church.

David Scott Jones

EDENTON – David Scott Jones, 47, a native of Portsmouth, Va.,

died July 16, 2007, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Jones was a member of the Providence Baptist Church, Chesapeake.

Survivors include his mother, Ann Jones Ford and her husband Robert Ford of Hertford; one daughter, Natlie Ann Jones of Como; one son, Jason Scott Jones of Como; one sister, Arnette Temple of Moyock; and one brother, Danny L. Jones of Disputanta, Va.;

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Snug Harbor Community Church by the Rev. Stanley Nixon. The family will receive friends in the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Snug Harbor Community Church, P.O. Box 114, Hertford, NC 27944. Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services of Hertford assisted the Jones Family.

Roland Brothers

NORFOLK, Va. – Roland Brothers, a native of Clarion, Pa., died July 13, 2007. He was the widower of Maude C. Fogan Brothers.

Mr. Brothers was raised and educated in Corapeake. He was employed at Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corp.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy E. Brothers and Jennifer R. Simpson; his brother, Benjamin &uot;Butler&uot; Brothers Sr. of Norfolk; and a granddaughter.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in Second Calvary Baptist Church, 2940 Corprew Ave. by Dr. Geoffrey Guns. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at 3744 Wedgefield Ave. one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. Chapel, is in charge. Antonio Bazemore

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n Antonio Deon Bazemore, a native of Aulander, died July 13, 2007 at Riverside Regional.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Soul Saving Station, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Wayne Welch. Burial will be in Mill Branch Church Cemetery, Aulander. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include his parents, Marjorie and Otis Bazemore Jr. of Aulander; two sons, Montavious Bazemore and Zion Bazemore, both of Newport News; one daughter, Emonie Bazemore of Newport News; one brother, Michael Lee of Newport News; three foster brothers, Dorell Boone of Gates County, Lamont Overton and Tremaine Gatling, both of Newport News; one sister, Lynett Joyner of Ahoskie; three foster sisters, Cornelia Futrell and Inesia Harmon, both of Aulander and Veronica Lee of Kelford; and his grandparents, Evelyn Futrell of Aulander, Evelyn Bazemore of Lewiston and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Lee of Aulander.
