WINDSOR – For the second time in the last year, there has been a traffic fatality here.

Windsor Police Chief Rodney Hoggard said it is also only the second time ever in his many years of police work that he can remember a fatality occurring in town involving a motor vehicle.

Margaret Haste, 92, of NC Hwy 308 just outside of Windsor, was killed when she ran a stoplight at the intersection of 308 with the US-13 Bypass.

&uot;Barnhill Construction was laying storm drain on the side of Sterlingworth Street and they had people out there turning signs… it was single-lane traffic and Haste was the only car in line,&uot; Hoggard stated.

He continued, &uot;She was stopped and after a few moments the guy turning the sign released her; she probably thought she could go on through the intersection.&uot;

Haste had the red light but failed to stop, and a log truck came through headed north on US 13 and struck her vehicle in the side.

She died at the scene some 30 minutes later, Hoggard said.

Eddie Burton Dickerson, 62, of Jamesville, was the driver of the unloaded Price Logging 18-wheeler.

Hoggard said he was investigating another minor wreck in the same construction area when Haste’s wreck occurred, so he was first on the scene.

The incident brings the total number of fatalities in the North Carolina Highway Patrol Troop A District II to 14 for 2007.

Six of those deaths have occurred in Bertie County.
