WINDSOR – Municipal filings closed here Friday at noon, but not without a flurry of filing n at least in some towns.

The major exception came in the town of Colerain where no candidates filed for any office on the slate. Incumbent Mayor Burney Baker nor Commissioner Robert Fringer filed to seek reelection.

With the mayor’s seat and the two town board seats on the November ballot, the Bertie County Board of Elections opted not to extend filing. With filing closed, that means whoever receives the highest write-in vote totals will become mayor and fill the two town board seats.

Similar situations exist in Powellsville, Lewiston and Askewville, where there are fewer candidates than open seats.

In Askewville, two of the three incumbent town board members filed for reelection. They are Rodney Thomas and Kay Brantley. Fellow incumbent Mary Lou Jernigan did not file.

In Powellsville, incumbent Commissioner J.T. Watford and challenger James Peele filed for three board seats. Current commissioners Ernie Carter and C.D. Hoggard did not file to seek reelection.

Lewiston-Woodville has a race in the Woodville District where June Jernigan filed against incumbent Eddie Graham. There are no filed candidates, however, for the Lewiston District seat held by Chris Cordon or the at-large seat held by Larry Mizelle.

In all cases, the person receiving the highest number of write-in votes will be elected.

While four towns struggled to have enough candidates, the towns of Windsor and Aulander had plenty.

In Windsor, three incumbents and two challengers have filed for three open seats on the town board.

Incumbents Bobby N. “Bob” Brown, Hoyt Cooper and Charles W.D. Fulk all filed to seek reelection while newcomers Collins Cooper and Carroll Ronnie Williams also filed for the town board.

Aulander has three candidates seeking to serve as the town’s mayor. Incumbent Joe Jernigan is seeking another term in office, but is being opposed by both Larry Drew and Ronald Poppell.

In the Aulander Commissioner race, incumbents Bobbie Parker and Jeanette Tinkham filed to seek reelection while Tony Todd has also filed for a seat on the town board.

Another place where citizens will have a choice will be on the Kelford Town Council where five incumbents and one challenger have filed for five seats. The five incumbents are James Bland Jr., Frank Harris, Linda Hathaway, Bailey Parker and Tierce Ruffin. Challenging them for one of the five seats will be Wayne Bland.

Change will come to Kelford in the mayor’s seat as incumbent Tim Emory did not seek reelection. Newcomer Tommy Bracy filed for the seat.

There will also be a slight change in the town of Roxobel where Martha Parker filed for one of four town commissioner seats. Three incumbents, H.C. Boschen, Carroll Minton and Sammy Pruden, also filed. Commissioner David Bracy did not seek reelection.

Rounding out the candidate slate in Bertie County are three incumbents mayors who are seeking reelection unopposed. They are Askewville Mayor John Pierce, Powellsville Mayor Thomas Asbell and Roxobel Mayor Gary Johnson.
